The AMB-S is an armoured tracked unarmed vehicle, designed for medical reconnaissance, search and rescue of wounded and their removal from the theatre of operations. In addition, it enables the provision of first aid to the wounded and ensures their transport to places of concentration of the wounded or to places of providing special treatment or to field hospitals.

The vehicle took over from the BVP-1 the chassis, transmission and directional gear and power unit of the type UTD-20.

The medical compartment was created behind the engine bulkhead, by redesigning the fighting compartment. Max. number of transported seated wounded is 9.
Internal compartment is hermetically sealed and air-conditioned, protected against the effects of WMD and CW. The armoured hull protects both crew and transported wounded against small arms fire and grenade splinters.
The original fuel tanks are replaced by tanks on the sides of the hull interior, with a total capacity of 520 litres of fuel.
Beams are fitted from the floor to the ceiling of the hull at the front and rear of the seats, which, together with guide and locking rails, are used to mount 4 stretchers for the wounded, so that two and two are always above each other.
The rear doors have been modified to cover almost the entire rear of the vehicle. Their total area and thus the opening has been increased by about half. There are no fuel tanks installed in the doors.
The interior of the left door houses a resuscitation kit and a sling bag.
Inside the right door is a medical bag and a bag for bandage material.
In the longitudinal axis, in the front of the medical compartment, there is a fully floating paramedic seat, which can be secured in four positions.
The front of the vehicle has been retained - the rear of the vehicle is distinguished by a new superstructure. A new, fully pivoting turret has been added in the roof of the front medical compartment, with a hatch over the paramedic seat.

The turret is equipped with optical and infrared equipment for locating the wounded on the battlefield.For night work, a manually operated searchlight is installed on the turret.

In newer versions, the turret has been moved from the center of the superstructure to above the vehicle commander's seat. The opening in the centre has been blinded.

A swing-out tubular structure is mounted on the roof of the vehicle, which when unfolded serves as the skeleton of the canvas shelter.

Slovenská modernizovaná ambulancia nesie na zadnej časti nadstavby výkyvnú rámovú rozkladaciu konštrukciu na vytvorenie prístrešku. Za touto konštrukciou je nesená i veľká debna s náradím a pomôckami. Do pravých zadných nastupovacích dverí bol opätovne osadený periskop a strieľňa. Úpravy a rozšírenie doznalo i vnútorné vybavenie(pribudla ďalšia fľaša lekárskeho kyslíku, prebudoval sa systém dávkovania kvapalín nad umývadlom, pribudli dva debny s lekárskym vybavením....).
