Siegfried Koitschka has entered into navy in April 1937. After a few months of service on the cruiser Admiral Hipper and in the training unit he was in in June 1940 translated to the subs. About six months later it became 2.the patrol officer on the U-552, with which he performed its prnních six combat cruises. In December 1941 left U-552 with the amount of combat experience.
The command training was appointed commander of the school of submarine At-7. In December 1942 took over command of the U-616. After one combat cruise in the north Atlantic with him in may 1943 managed to penetrate the straits of Gibraltar.
After six combat cruises in the Mediterranean sea, where in October 1943 sank an american destroyer and in may 1944 damaged the two ships left the 30.April the Toulon and set off on its final voyage.
During this voyage he sunk two ships, but 14.may 1944 he was found by american destroyers. The next three days struck U-616 destroyers and aircraft. 17.may was U-616 forced to emerge. All crew members were rescued.
Koitschka then spent more than two years in allied captivity before he was in June 1946 released.
