2. the division was formally established 21. September 1917 in the Regular army. To the actual occurrence occurred 26. October 1917 in the French Bourmontu. The division was part of the American expeditionary forces (AEF) and consisted of 3. infantry brigade (9th. infantry regiment and 23. infantry regiment) and 4. brigade of marines (5. a regiment of marines, and 6. regiment of naval infantry), field artillery battalion, and a number of alarm units. For the observation is the fact that the division twice commanded by marine corps general, which is historically unique. It was the brigadier general Doyena and major general Lejeunea, who later became the commander of the marine corps.

The division spent the winter of 1917/1918 training with the French veterans. Ačkolin american units were not considered ready for battle, the German spring offensive sought their deployment. 2. the division went through a baptism in the battle of Belleau Wood, and subsequently participated in a number of other battles - at Chateau-Thierry, Soissons or Blanc Mont. Eventually participated in the offensive in the area of the Meuse-Argonne. After the cessation of fighting filled the division of occupation duties. In July 1919 she returned back to the US. It was the american division, which it acquired in the framework of the AEF the most honors.

The division was in the interwar period stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, texas. She was one of only three divisions, which remained in active service, and of them was at least reduced, thanks to the fact that the protection of the mexican border. In addition, served as the experimental unit, which examined the new concepts of warfare and organizational structure of the units. In 1940 the division first went into the so-called triangular organization. She was also a pioneer of anti-tank combat or modern methods of cooperation with the air force. In the years 1940 and 1941 through the division intensive training and a few maneuvers. In August 1942, was renamed the 2. infantry division.
