Iron Dome (Czech: Iron Dome) is an air defence system designed and developed by the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defence Systems. The system is designed to destroy short-range missiles or artillery projectiles of 155 mm calibre and above in all weather conditions, day and night. The system is capable of destroying targets at a range of 4 to 70 km.
The system was developed to eliminate the threat of rocket attacks by Palestinian (and other) extremists on targets in Israel. Development has been underway since 2005, with development in cooperation with the IDF since 2007. In 2008-2009, the system was successfully tested (see 06.01.2010 - Iron Dome System Passed Tests Successfully), and in 2009 the system was inducted into the armament of the 947th Anti-Aircraft Missile Detachment (947th "Marksmen" Stinger Battalion) of the IAF. After another two years, the system was put into operational use.
The Iron Dome system is made up of: - a multi-purpose radar developed by Elta designed to detect and track targets - a fire control system developed by mPrest Systems - a container launcher with Tamir missiles
The multi-purpose radar is used to detect the launch of a missile and to acquire data on its trajectory. The measured data is forwarded to the fire control system where the missile trajectory is evaluated, the impact location is determined and a decision is made to destroy the missile (if the missile hits an uninhabited area, a counter-missile is generally not fired). If the missile poses a threat, the target data is sent to the firing element that can destroy the target most effectively.
