From its inception until December 1942, the battalion had only the 1st Company armed with PzKpfw VI (Sd.Kfz.181) Tiger. In December 1942, the 2nd Company, armed with nine Tigers and ten Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.N. However, it was organizationally subordinated to schw.Panz.Abt.503 and February 10, 1943 was incorporated into it as its 3rd Company. In the spring of 1943 began the formation of the 2nd and 3rd companies schw.Panz.Abt.502
The first battle took place on September 21, 1942, when the 1st Company moved along narrow forest roads and Soviet anti-tank guns neutralized four Tigers. In the winter of 1942 - 1943, the 1st Company engaged in heavy fighting at Lake Ladoga. On January 29, 1943, the Soviets managed to capture one Tiger Ausf.H1 number "100", which was later exhibited at an exhibition of captured German technology in Moscow.
He fought for the first time in full force with three companies at Lake Ladoga in mid-1943. He was withdrawn from the front in September 1943 and from October 1943 fought for Nevel.
