Colonel General Ján Golian

(26.1.1906 Dombovár - ?.?.1945 Flossenburg

Ján Golian was born on 26 January 1906 in Dombovár, Hungary, into the large family of Rudolf Golian, a machinist. In 1927 he successfully completed his studies at the Military Academy in Hranice, Moravia as a lieutenant of artillery. He furthered his military education at the Military University in Prague. On May 3, 1938, he was capt. Golian was assigned to the 10th Division in Banská Bystrica, where he served as the head of the 2nd Department of the Division Headquarters. After the dissolution of the Czechoslovak Republic, Golian experienced great disappointment. He considered the Slovak state to be a makeshift, and he also had a hard time with the disintegration of the Czechoslovak army. On 15 December 1939, Golian was demoted to the category of general staff officers and promoted to major. He successively held a number of positions: chief of the 3rd staff department of the 1st Division, chief of the mobilization and organization department, second general staff officer of the headquarters of the 1st Division, and finally he was chief of the material department of the Rapid Division. He fought on the Soviet-German front, where he got to know the real mindset of the Slovak army, saw the resistance of the Slovak soldiers against the war with the USSR, made his first contacts with the Soviet partisans...

In 1942, mjr. In 1943 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the general staff. Golian was aware of the impact of the victories of the Soviet Army on the soldiers of the Rapid Division, followed the advance of the troops, had an all-Slavic feeling and personal experience of German fascism on the territory of the USSR.

In mid-1943, Col. Golian returned from the Eastern Front. It was a period when the objective situation in Slovakia, as a result of international military-political events and the development of the anti-fascist resistance, required the unification of forces and the preparation of conditions for nationwide armed resistance. The illegal SNR became the supreme organ of the preparations for the uprising. At that time Golian was transferred to Banská Bystrica and appointed Chief of Staff of the Land Army Command, which opened up the possibility of building a conspiratorial network in the military garrisons with the help of a military group composed of Col. Ferjenčík, Col. Vesel and Lt. Kišš-Kalina. They were later joined by a number of anti-fascist-minded officers.

At the beginning of 1944, the illegal SNR held secret negotiations with Golian's military group and with the group of Col. Talski and Col. Imra. The aim of the negotiations was to recruit influential officers for cooperation in the resistance. The activities of the groups were governed by the directives of the Czechoslovak government in London, which designated Golian as the temporary commander of the military organization in Slovakia and authorized him to lead military actions.

On 27 April 1944, Col. Golian at a secret meeting in Bratislava familiarised himself with the programme and composition of the illegal SNR and assumed the post of military commander of the armed insurrection. At the meeting, Golian understood the interpretation and meaning of the Christmas Agreement on the necessity of a united and centrally led armed struggle against German fascism and domestic clerofascism.

The SNR commissioned Golian to work out a military strategic plan and military preparations for the uprising. Col. Golian was to establish contact with the already existing partisan units in Slovakia and support them with weapons and ammunition. The military plan was to be worked out in accordance with the situation on the German-Soviet front so that the uprising would be coordinated with the operations of the Soviet army. These important tasks required complete conspiracy, trust, joint action, and a willingness to subordinate personal ambitions to the struggle for national freedom. Golian's real representatives were Col. Ferjencik (intelligence and general sector), Capt. Polák (intelligence and financial issues), mjr. Nosko (Chief of Staff of Military Leadership), Maj. Marko (communications matters), Maj. Cyprich (guerrilla and material department).

In the summer of 1944 pplk. Golian was engaged in military preparations for the uprising. On 4 August 1944, a SNR delegation flew to the USSR, consisting of K. Šmidke and M. Ferjenčík in order to inform the Soviet side about the state of SNP preparations.

In the last decade of August 1944, partisans occupied several Slovak towns and villages, the resistance resulted in a nationwide uprising. News of this reached the German authorities in Slovakia and the representatives of the Klérofascist government in Bratislava. The situation became unmanageable for them and J. Tiso agreed to the arrival of German occupation troops in Slovakia from 29 August 1944.

Already on 25 August 1944, the SNR Military Headquarters learned of the concentration of German troops on the Slovak-Moravian border. Ján Golian issues an order for combat readiness, standing at the head of the rebel army. For the implementation of the military preparation of the uprising and for the successful management of the activities of the rebel army, Col. Ján Golian was promoted to colonel of the General Staff by the London MNO on 29.8.1944 and to brigadier general by the decision of the National Council of the Republic of Poland on 5.9.1944.

During the Uprising Golian demonstrated his abilities in the defence of the free territory, where he honestly bore the burden of responsibility in the highest position of the rebel commander.

His last days in the rebel territory were connected with his participation in the partisan war in the Slovak mountains. On 3 November 1944, during the Einsatzkommando 14 terrorist sweep against the insurgents, General Ján Golian and General Viest were captured in Pohronský Bukovec. This was followed by interrogations at the headquarters of EK-14 and in Bratislava. The interrogations were followed by transport to Berlin, where both generals were sentenced to death, despite the international agreements in force on the protection of prisoners of war. The execution was probably carried out at the Flossenburg concentration camp on an unknown date in 1945.
