The commander of the squadron to 01.09.1939 was Hauptmann Fritz Schaffer.
The machines of the squadron carried the designation U5+_M.

03.09.1939 was in combat flight damaged Dornier do 17 Z with a designation U5+EH. After the failure of the engines had to make an emergency landing on the belly near the village of Bartenstein in East Prussia (today the municipality of Bartoszyce in Poland). The rate of damage - 30%.
The crew: Uffz. Karl Schiwek - pilot, observer heilmann magazine, Uffz. Heinrich Suschka - radiooperatér, Fw. Johannes Otlik - on-board mechanic.
