Fliegerkompanie 1 (Flik 1 Flik 1D, Flik 1J)

Flik 1 was established in July 1914 at Aspern Airport near Vienna (according to other sources in Vienna's New Town). The commander was appointed [a] Oberleutnant (later Hauptmann) Josef Smetana. Subsequently, the unit was sent to the Serbian front. After the outbreak of war between Russia and Austria-Hungary, it was decided to move it to the Russian front. The move took place during August 1914, but the unit was not able to operate until the beginning of September 1914. The reason was the maximum occupancy of the railway.

After the downing of the unit commander Hauptmann Josef Smetana January 21, 1915 1) was commander Oberleutnant Otto Jindra. He remained so until January 1918, when he was entrusted with the command of Fliegergruppe G.

With the reorganization of the entire Königlich und Kaiserlich Luftfahrtruppen, Flik 1 was transformed in the summer of 1917 into Flik 1D - Divisions Fliegerkompanie. Thus, it was intended for military reconnaissance and ground support at the division level 2).

With the conclusion of the Brest-Lithuanian Peace, Flik 1D's operational activities on the Russian front were terminated on December 7, 1917. However, it remained there within the occupying forces in Ukraine until June 15, 1918.

It was then transferred to Vienna's New Town and transformed again into the Flik 1J - Jagd Fliegerkompanie fighter unit, a fighter unit designed to destroy enemy aircraft and protect its own aircraft 3).

Aviation (Berg) D.I[/url] got into service. Subsequently, she moved to the Adriatic coast to Igalo Airport, from where she defended the naval base in the Bay of Kotor.
In June 1918, Offizierstellvertreter Julius Arigi, the second best ace of Austria-Hungary, was transferred to the Flik 1J unit. the last four kills.

At the turn of October and November 1918, Flik 1J was disbanded at Igalo Airport.

In total, Flik 1/1D/1J pilots shot down 29 enemy aircraft and balloons. Of these, 24 on the Russian front and 5 on the Italian front.

Comment:
1) He was shot down on January 21, 1915 while flying to the besieged fortress Przemyśl, over the village Hasakowa fire from the ground. He was seriously wounded and fell into Russian captivity.

2) According to the regulation, it had 4 - 6 reconnaissance aircraft and several fighter aircraft. The two planes were to be stored in a reserve warehouse. By regulation of January 30, 1918, Flik-D was to have 4 two-seater reconnaissance and light bombers and 2 fighters.

3) Jagd Fliegerkompanie was to have 18 fighters and 18 fighter pilots, consisting of three Kette (swarms) of 6 aircraft and pilots. Which, given the economic situation and the development of the whole war, never succeeded. And probably not at any other Flik fighter.
