1.Group of Dive Bomber Squadron 1 - I./St.G 1


Status as of 1 September 1939:
Group Commander - Hptm. Paul-Werner Hozzel - current commander, Maj. Rentschem, was injured by a fall down the stairs in his own house on 31 August (concussion).
Commander of the 1st Squadron (Staffel) - Oblt. Kurt Kuhlmey, aircraft designation: A5+_H
2nd Squadron Commander - Oblt. Heinz Bohne, aircraft designation A5+_K
3rd Squadron Commander - Oblt. Bruno Dilley, aircraft designation A5+_L


As of 26.8.1939 the group had : 38 Ju 87B and 3 Do 17P

Irreparable losses in the Polish campaign:
1.9. - A5+?H - Fw. Günther Giertz + gunner Uffz. Wilhelm Tessner from 1./St.G 1- were killed in an accident due to ground fog during the launch to the first combat mission at around 4.20 pm - the first Luftwaffe loss in the war against Poland
1 Sep - Gruppenkommandeur Hptm.Hozzel- made an emergency landing at 6.15 pm due to lack of fuel near Nidzica (Neidenburg). His machine from 1st Staffel A5+JH rolled over on its back and its damage reached 70%.
3.9. - pilot Uffz. Tatzlaff - shot down near Mława by 81st motorized anti-aircraft battery. The crew escaped after an emergency landing without injuries. Damage rate of Ju 87B A5+?L - 80%
3 Sep - A Ju 52/3m transport from 2nd Staffel crashed on landing at Griesslienen airfield. The crew perished in the wreckage - Ofw.Gerhard Mohrholz, Uffz.Hermann Petri, Uffz. Josef Klein and 15 other transported persons + 2 civilian workers.
4.9. - Ju 87B A5+?L from 3rd Staffel shot down over Warsaw (Mokotów - Babice) by Lt.pilot Wojciech Januszewicz from 111th Fighter Squadron. The pilot, Lt. Joachim Langbehn, made an emergency landing and fell into captivity. His gunner, Uffz. Theodor Amann, was shot down by a Polish fighter.
26.9. - during a raid on the fortress Modlin was hit by anti-aircraft fire and shot down by a Ju 87B A5+?H from the 1st Staffel. The pilot Fw. von Schrader managed to save himself by parachuting out of the burning machine. The gunner, Uffz. Kremke, died in the wreckage.


Claimed aerial victory:
1.9. - 17.15 hrs. Uffz. Rüdiger 2nd /St.G 2 - P.24 over Warsaw - probably a wound to st.szer.pil. Zdzisław Horn from 113th Fighter Squadron. He landed at his airfield and collapsed after landing due to a gunshot wound to his back.
4.9. - during the afternoon raid on Warsaw (16.07 - 17.30 hrs.) claimed the kills of Polish P.24 two deck gunners - Gefr. Bohl and Uffz. Lichtenstein. The victim may have been Lt. pilot Władysław Drecki of 111 Fighter Squadron, who was wounded in the fight but managed to land at his own airfield.
4 Sep - The Stukas formation was accompanied by Do 17P A4+FB during the afternoon bombing of Warsaw. According to German sources, it was attacked by a group of four Polish fighters. Radio operator Gefr. Selke claimed a probable shoot down of the Polish machine. However, Polish sources do not confirm this fact.
