Sergei Mikhailovich Fedyakov

The future Hero of the Soviet Union was born on November 8, 1920 in the village of Yekaterinovka (Екатериновка), where his parents moved in 1919 from the town of Pavlovo on the Oka. In 1921 they moved back to this town and young Sergei completed eight grades of primary school there. Subsequently, in 1936, he was apprenticed in the factory machine-engineering apprenticeship and worked there as a turner. At the same time, from 1938, he learned the art of piloting in the local aeroclub. Before the Soviet Union invaded, he was drafted into the army in 1940 and was sent to the Engeli Military Aviation School for pilots, which he graduated from in 1941. In that year the school was relocated to the town of Lipetsk. From October 1941 he served in a reserve regiment in the Kuybyshev region and then in a training regiment in Tambov, where he gained experience with the Il-2. He joined the fighting against the invaders in the autumn of 1942 in the formation of the 872nd Combat Aviation Regiment, first on the Volkhovsky and later Leningrad Front. He made his first combat flight in November 1942 during the attack on Chudovo station. Due to his abilities, he also progressed up the ladder of his military career, and by March 1944, at the rank of lieutenant (senior lieutenant), he was already deputy commander of Squadron 872. Battle Aviation Regiment, which fell under the 281st Combat Aviation Division and the 13th Air Army Leningrad Front.

By that time, Sergei Fedyakov had flown a total of 105 combat sorties, 85 of them as a group leader, destroying a large number of enemy personnel and equipment. He was particularly successful in the battles to break the blockade of Leningrad. It was during these battles that he was first wounded, when his stormtrooper took a hit from enemy anti-aircraft artillery and he himself suffered a facial wound from a shrapnel hit. Despite his face being covered in blood, he managed to bring the aircraft safely to his airfield. In June 1943, his fighter aircraft was again hit by anti-aircraft fire and only with difficulty did he manage to fly across the front line. He sustained serious injuries in an emergency landing into a forest undergrowth, after recovering from which he rejoined his regiment. In total, Fedyakov spent two years continuously at the front, during which time he made 158 (according to some sources 276) combat sorties, 105 of them as a group commander. His last combat flights were during the liberation of the Estonian island of Saaremaa.

For the heroism shown in combat, he was granted the right to wear the title Hero of the Soviet Union by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 19.08.1944, and at the same time awarded the Gold Star (№4477).

After the end of the war, Sergei Fedyakov continued his service in the military aviation. After retiring with the rank of captain in 1960, he first worked as a transport aircraft pilot, later becoming employed in the aviation industry and leading a group of test pilots. He lived in the city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), which he helped liberate during the war. He died on 04.01.2009 at the age of 88, and is buried in the Nicholas Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg.
