1K17 Szhatie (Russian: 1К17 Сжатие - "Compression") was the culmination of laser vehicle projects developed in the late 80's. The vehicle uses the body of a self-propelled artillery system Msta-S, but instead of a 152mm howitzer is a tank armed with laser projectors. Its task was to decommission with the help of high-intensity laser beams, or directly destroy optical-electronic devices on enemy combat vehicles, aircraft and missiles. The impact on the human eye would probably end in permanent blindness. The tank was given the NATO code name Stiletto. To protect against infantry and helicopters was armed with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun NSVT.


1K17 was a joint creation of the Soviet NPO Astrophysics under the leadership of N.D. Ustinov (son of the then Minister of Defense of the USSR, Ustinov) and the Uraltransmash plant in Sverdlovsk (now Ekatirinburg) under the leadership of V. Tomashov. The first proposals were made in the 70s. Despite the high degree of secrecy, however, the Pentagon received project plans from defectors. The first prototype 1K17 was delivered in December 1990, and from 1991 to 1992 it was tested. The tank passed all tests and was recommended for inclusion in the USSR Armed Forces.


Instead of the howitzer, there were 15 lenses in the 1K17 tower, which were protected by armored covers when moving, the crew was placed in the middle of the vehicle. It was a complex system of a new generation of blinding beam with a multi-channel rigid laser based on alumina (Al2O3) with its own aiming system. Each of the 12 optical channels (upper and lower rows of lenses) had its own aiming system. This allowed the laser to attack at different distances and under different conditions. The middle row of lenses is part of the aiming system, small and large lenses on the right edge are part of the automatic search and aiming system. A pair of similar lenses on the left edge are optical sights, the smaller one is the day, the bigger the night one. The night sight has two laser rangefinders. Each lens is equipped with an anti-reflective layer.


Power for the laser was supplied from the main engine, electric generator and auxiliary battery system, which charged the capacitors located in the rear of the vehicle. The accumulated energy was fired through a silver tube wound into a coil, where it came into contact with a specially made synthetic 30kg ruby crystal in the shape of a cylinder, which created the final stage of the beam. The ruby was placed in a special spiral container, with discharge lamps. This whole arrangement helped to amplify the overall laser beam and increase convergence. But at the same time it was an astronomically expensive system, and despite all the energy, the beam power was small, only 5% efficient for such a large laser. In fact, we managed to produce only a magnification of the mirrors with which the children reflect the sun in their eyes as part of the fun. According to other sources, another element could be used, such as Nd: YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet; Nd: Y3Al5O12), which allows a stronger energy pulse.


The advantage of the 1K17 tank was the possibility of absolutely accurate firing at twice the distance of any tank at the time, another advantage was the almost immediate effect of the laser beam on the target and the need for ballistic repair of the weapon. The disadvantage was the huge price of one vehicle, expensive production and overall complexity, serial production of the tank was almost impossible. The tank also needed a completely clean sector of fire to make its laser beam effective, a condition that is difficult to fight.


Only two pieces were made, in the early 90's when the USSR ran out of money, the project was canceled.
In the chaos that occurred after the collapse of the USSR, these two pieces of 1K17 were lost, for a long time no one knew anything about them. One vehicle was probably scrapped, the other happened to appear in 2010 at the Military Technical Museum in the village of Ivanovskoe near Moscow.
