The GAZ-3308 is the successor to the GAZ-66. It was developed based on the requirements of the Russian Army. The basic production version is powered by gasoline engines meeting Euro-2 and Euro-3 standards. In addition to it, diesel engines - MMZ D-245.7, or JaMZ-53442 - were also installed in the vehicles. Vehicles with diesel engines meeting Euro-2 and 3 standards were designated as GAZ-33081.
In 2009, production of vehicles with petrol engines was discontinued due to lack of user interest and production of the GAZ-33081 version continues.


Shortly after the start of serialproduction, the vehicle was released for export. In 2000, a prototype of the GAZ-33082 (powered by a GAZ-562 diesel turbocharged engine produced under license from Steyr) was introduced in Ukraine. In 2005, 114 vehicles were shipped to the Syrian army. The Armenian Armed Forces purchased an unspecified number of vehicles on which they installed the N-2 light rocket launcher.
