History:

After the introduction of any weapon, sooner or later a countermeasure is found that reduces the effectiveness of the weapon. And then a solution is immediately sought that reduces the effectiveness of the countermeasure. This was no different with personal ballistic protective equipment, especially body armor (body armor - there is no bulletproof!), which began to proliferate en masse in the late 1960s. Engineers in all countries with advanced arms industries sought to design munitions that could penetrate the normal ballistic protection of an individual. In the Soviet Union in the late 1970s, under the leadership of A. D. Denisova developed a new 5.45mm pistol cartridge. It featured a bottle cartridge and an ogival projectile with a flat bullet. The cartridge is standardized by the C.I.P. as 5.45x18, but is sometimes referred to as MPC (Малокалибэрный Пистолетный Централного боя- Malokalibernyj Pistoljetnyj Centralnogo boja -malorazovy pistolnyj s sredalnyi inflammem). It is labored by a full-jacketed bullet with a lead core weighing 2.7g (Eo=135J) or by a full-jacketed bullet with a steel core and a lead shirt weighing 2.4g (Eo=119J). The muzzle velocity in both cases reaches 315m/s. The steel-core projectile, manufactured for military use, can penetrate up to 55 layers of Kevlar.

For the new cartridge, a new self-loading pistol was developed in Izhevsk in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The designers of the gun were Tikhon Lashnev (1919-1988), Anatoly Simarin (1936-1991) and Lev Kulikov (1931- ). The gun has a simple design with a dynamic breech and unusually small dimensions. In 1983 it was adopted into the armament of the USSR armed forces under the designation PSM (ПСМ - Пистолет Самозарядный, Малогабарытный - Pistoljet Samozarjadnyj, Malogabarytnyj - Self-loading, small-size pistol) and mass production started the same year.

PSM pistols in the Soviet Union were used primarily by units of the Ministry of the Interior and the State Security Committee (Комитет Государственной Безопасности - Komiteta Gosudarstvennoi Bezopasnosti - KGB). Other "users" of the PSM pistol were party officials who used it for self-defense purposes (and silly me always thought the nation loved them...). In the Soviet army, they were partly armed with them by high-ranking staff officers, some airborne units and special purpose units. Due to their small size, light weight and good efficiency, PSM pistols were also popular among Soviet pilots deployed in Afghanistan. Airmen carried them in special pockets sewn onto their survival vests.

The pistol is still manufactured in the original 5.45mm calibre in Izhevsk under the designation IŽ-75 and is sold on our market. The IŽ-75 differs from the original PSM only in the description on the left side of the breech. However, the big disadvantage in our conditions is the high price of ammunition (about 20 CZK for 1 round). In Izhevsk there were also variants in 6,35mm Browning calibre, marked Baikal MP-441 and in .22LR calibre.

Construction:

The PSM pistol is a self-loading pistol with a non-locking, dynamic bolt and double-action (SA/DA) percussion. The pistol body is made of aluminum alloy. The manual safety is located on the left rear of the slide and locks the firing pin in addition to the percussion cock. The safety and hammer cock are shaped in such a way that when the pistol is cocked, the hammer can be cocked at the same time.
The sights are open, the sight is laterally adjustable, and the plate sight is fixed.
The cartridges are stored in a single-row box magazine.

Manufacture:
The PSM pistol is manufactured by the Izhevsk Armory ([i:aaaa]Ижевский Механический Завод - Izhevsk Mechanical Plant) since 1983 and production is still going on today. Weapons for the civilian market bear the designation Izh-75.

Markings:
The original service version bears no markings other than the serial number. Pistols for the civilian market bear the designation Izh-75 on the left side of the breech, either in the Russian form "ИЖ-75" or in the English transcription "Izh-75". The English variant is sometimes accompanied by the inscription "MADE IN RUSSIA" under the designation.
