Because the last six self-propelled guns StuG III Ausf.A were outside the original plan to be delivered to the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler unit, the company Daimler-Benz1) (Alkett2)) produced a second small additional batch of six vehicles, which used the platform Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.G (6./Z.W.)1).

Older sources Panzer Tracts (Jentz and Doyle)3) and Messrs Müller and Zimmermann 2) claim that 20 Fgst.Nr.90401-90420 machines were produced using the Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.F (5.Z.W.)) platform and the StuG III Ausf.B superstructure. Personally, I'm relying on the latest Panzer Tracts 1) source, which says six vehicles were produced.
This six machines were delivered by Sturmgeschütz-Batterie 666.
The StuG III Ausf.A (2nd Serie) was easily identifiable by a pair of armoured vent covers to the couplers and an additional 20mm of frontal hull armour which was bolted on. There were emergency hatches on the sides of the tub, but these were welded shut. There was no deflector in front of the driver's hatch. The hatches to the couplers came from the tank, i.e. they were two-piece and opened towards the front and rear. The vehicles had a notek. The steel collar of the gun shield (the joint of the gun cover and the shield) was replaced by a massive weld. The slotted tunnel in front of the gun sight was fastened with screws.
