Bulletless cartridge for the G-11 assault rifle, developed by Dynamit Nobel and Heckler & Koch, commissioned by the Bundeswehr. The outer "casing" (ejection charge body) consists of a newly developed compressed gunpowder of special composition, designated HITP (High Ignition Temperature Propellant).
When fired, after the combustible primer is activated, the propellant composition is ignited. The pressure shock created by the burning of the propellant will crush the propellant body into its original particles. The escape of burnt powder gases from the bullet is prevented by a plastic cap on the front of the cartridge which seals the barrel. The subsequent combustion of the powder charge is the same as for a normal cartridge. Both the primer and the plastic cap are burned.
The cartridge is shaped like a quadrilateral prism, which becomes cylindrical in the front part (for the orientation of the cartridge when inserted into the magazine).
The G-11 rifle, together with the cartridgeless ammunition, successfully passed military trials in 1989, but due to lack of funding after German reunification it was not introduced into the arsenal.
