Lothar-Siegfried Freiherr von Richthofen (September 27, 1894 - July 4, 1922)
Lothar-Siegfried Freiherr von Richthofen was one of the most successful pilots of World War I thanks to 40 shots. Nevertheless, people remember him mainly as the young brother of the Red Baron. He was born in Breslau as the third of four children of Albrecht Richthofen and his wife Kunigunde. After attending the local grammar school, he embarked on a successful military career. At the beginning of the war, like his brother, he served in the cavalry (Dragoner-Regiment (1. schlesisches) Nr. 4 'von Bredow') and was transferred to the Luftstreitkräfte at his own request. In 1915 he completed pilot training within the KG4. From March 16, 1917 he flew under his brother's command within Jasta 11. Lothar introduced himself here very quickly, during the so-called bloody April he shot down 16 aircraft.
After Manfred left the unit, Lothar was given command. He was also successful in this role from the beginning on a single day on May 7, not far from Douai, his Jasta 11 shot down 11 aircraft of the elite British 56th Squadron, including the then most successful British ace Albert Ball (44 victories). However, this shot was not exactly a common victory. They both got into a fight with great vigor. They maneuvered each other several times. In the end, however, Lothar's 21st victory was due to reduced visibility (fog) and Ball's maneuver, which shut down his engine (perhaps the fuel hose loosened, Lothar may have damaged it by firing, or the carburetor simply stopped working correctly during the maneuver). The result was a crash into the ground. Lothar was in a tight spot and crashed almost immediately. Ball did not survive the crash, Lothar escaped as both machines landed behind the German lines. This was widely used propaganda, so Lothar was forced by the command to play the role of winner. As there were not even bullets in the plane to increase the authenticity of the victory, a full magazine with a revolver was fired into the wreck of the SE5 before shooting. Only a later survey showed the real truth. Lothar was not deterred from the flight by flying for a long time, but on May 13, 1917, he was hit by ground fire and crashed badly. This excluded him from the game for 5 months, but at the same time he received the Pour le Mérite award. However, the injuries did not escape him even then, and on March 13, 1918, he suffered another ugly injury after the accident with Fokker Dr.I. It is all the more surprising that his shots continued to rise and on August 12, 1918 they stopped at number 40. Then, on his last combat flight with the Fokker D.VII, he crashed again and even spent the war healing. From the point of view of the ratio of the number of shots to the number of operational flights resp. days at the front, he is one of the most effective pilots of the First World War. The other pilots from his squadron said: Lothar is not a hunter, Lothar is just a shooter.
After the war, Lothar flew as a civilian pilot on commercial flights. Unfortunately, on July 4, 1922, he dropped the D1481 aircraft (although this designation is used in virtually every source, this number belongs to the Klemm L25 who was written off in the 1929 crash, so it is most likely an aircraft with a different number) engine during a flight from Berlin to Hamburg. After the subsequent fall, Lothar was immediately dead. The American actress Fern Andra and her producer George Bluen also flew in the plane. Both were taken to hospital, where Bluen was later injured. Fern Andra has been treated for injuries for over a year. After all, they seemed to be close to Lothar, and this flight was also to be part of the preparation of a film about his more famous brother Manfred. Long enough later, Lothar's mother, Countess Kunigunde von Richthofen, and Fern Andra met again in Wiesbaden (see photo). Fern Andra did not die in South Carolina until 1974. After Lothar, his wife and two children (daughter and son) remained. During World War II, Lothar's son Wolf-Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen was an officer in Whermacht and after the war he founded a relatively successful business.

Unfortunately, I have to put into perspective a variety of the above information.
Lothar during Bloody April 1917 nesestřelil 16 but 15 aircraft, to the last April namely he had a score of 16 victories, however, including a 1-wave from the end of march.
7. 5. 1917 lost 56. squadron 11 aircraft, but only 6. Lothar alone in this fight claimed the victory Sopwithu Triplane (!) not-5, and moreover, it came to his 20. not 21. the victory (his brother Manfred even shows number 22, while confirming the version with trojplošníkem), while the discrepancies are local and temporal. Lothar was forced to crash land due to prostříleným reservoirs. Ball was, according to the postwar testimony of local citizens shot down near the village of Annoeullin a machine gun from the church tower.
That unfortunate 13. 5. 1917 was Lothar injured by missile fire-damaged from the earth into the hip, and lost consciousness just before the emergency landing.
Of that 13. 3. 1918, he was again shot down, this time at his downing participated in the August Orlebar, the pilot of the Sopwith Camelu from 73. squadron and the crew of Bristol Fighter F.2b from 62. squadron, which consisted of Geoffrey Hughes and Hugh Claye. His Fokker Dr. I v no 454/17 ustřelili one load-bearing surface and Lothar suffered during an emergency landing severe injuries particularly in the face.
The last injury he suffered 13. 8. 1918 but not after a crash, but in a duel with Sopwith Camelem from the american 148. Aero Squadron, who flew the Captain Field (E. Kinley. Get him in the duel prostřelil the right thigh and Lothar, despite severe injuries, managed to crash-land.
Mention of the high efficiency ratio of combat flights/kills is exact. The průpovídku on the shooters and hunters, however, used his father, not fellow members of the squadron and the first time it in connection with the Lotharem said to his brother:
[i:a68f41248c]"My father distinguished between a hunter and a gunner, who has the pleasure of shooting. When I shot down one Englishman, my hunting passion for the nearest čtvrthodinku ukojena. Therefore I can't shoot down the two Britons immediately after the other. I feel hunter. (...) In the case of the brother it was otherwise. I had the opportunity to watch it while downing his fourth and fifth of the adversary. (...) ... I can see how the brother sitting behind the Englishman, of which just vyšlehly the flames, the machine exploded. Next to the Englishman flies the other. Brother left first, which was still in the air, he aimed the machine gun on the second and just shot away, no breaks. After a brief fight fell the other.
At home with me, proudly asked: how Much of it they shot down? I said quite modestly: One. He turns to me his back and says ,I two. I've sent it to you is found. (...) He returned late in the afternoon, but found only one. The search for the victims of such shooters is difficult. ...only the second day of the report sections, where the debris is located." [/i:a68f41248c]
To that fatal accident of 4. 7. 1922 occurred with the aircraft of the LVG C.VI (it was a military observation type, converted for the civil use) heading D 148 owned by the company Deutsche Luft-Reederei.
Worth mentioning still is that Lothar is of the year 1919 he married the countess von Keyserlingk, with whom he had two children, a son and a daughter. Son, the Wolf-Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen served under 2. world war as an officer in the German army, but further details are not known.

By the way he was buried next to his father in Schweidnitz today's Swidnica (Poland). However, his grave has been lost so today his descendants place candles at the family tomb in Wiesbaden. Last year, however, a monument to this famous pilot was erected in Swidnitz as well.
His son was an officer in the Wehrmacht during World War II and after the war he had an export-import company (he also had two children, i.e. Lothar's grandchildren).
