Feldmarschall Svetozar Boroevic de Bojna

Field Marshal Svetozár Boroevič von Bojna, one of the most capable commanding officers of Austria-Hungary, was born in 1856. He was considered by other officers to be very careful and defeated, which he was often criticized for. However, this criticism was unfounded, as Svetozár Boroevič von Bojna was one of the few officers in Austria-Hungary who saw things as they really were and did not form unrealistic ideas, as was often seen of other commanding officers during the First World War.

The first year war as commander of the 3rd Austro-Hungarian Army led defensive battles against the Russian attack in the Carpathians. Thanks to his ability to see things really and also due to his considerable talent for waging defensive battles, Austria-Hungary avoided a complete defeat, which would certainly occur if the Russians succeeded in the original plan of attack and the Russian army got deep into the interior of Austria-Hungary. The country in the Carpathians, which was ideal for such battles, also helped him a lot in these defensive battles.

In 1915 he was transferred to the Italian front, where he commanded the 5th Austro-Hungarian Army. She suffered significant losses in the offensive operations that Boroevich had to undertake on the Italian front. Boroevich did not have the character to conduct confident and risky offensive operations, and this was proportional to the losses that units under his command on the Italian front made. Perhaps surprisingly, and despite heavy losses, Boroevich was appointed field marshal on February 1, 1918.

In the last year of the war, Boroevich was able to return to the defensive tactics he best understood and mastered. However, the defeat of Austria-Hungary could no longer be prevented. After the failure of the Austro-Hungarian army at Piava, there was a disruption in the army and after the war ended, Boroevich withdrew from public events.

Svetozár Boroevič von Bojna was the only officer of the Austro-Hungarian army to be awarded the Commander's and Royal Cross of the Military Order of Maria Theresa. He was also awarded the prestigious German award Pour le Merite. In addition to these awards, he was awarded many other honors. Field Marshal Svetozar Boroevich von Bojna, the most distinguished commander of the Austro-Hungarian army, died in 1920 at the age of 63.
