On August 24, 1914, Colonel Jean Baptiste Estienne formulated a vision of the all-terrain vehicles that would determine the direction of modern warfare, when he predicted a radical change. Immobile trench warfare was to be transformed by armoured vehicles equipped with weapons that were capable of moving in the terrain.
One of the first attempts to develop a vehicle that would allow troops to more easily negotiate wire obstacles was a vehicle design by engineer Louis Boirault. It was a vehicle with six huge frame structures (4x3 m) that rotated circumferentially around the crew cab and power unit. The propulsion was provided by a petrol engine, the actual movement of the frames was provided by shafts and chains. It was an extremely fragile and inefficient vehicle, but it was capable of crossing 2 metre wide trenches or making a 4 metre wide passage through barbed wire. The vehicle was not armoured and carried no armament. It was only the first experimental model. Tests of the vehicle took place on 10.4.1915 and 21.6.1915. The vehicle's poor performance and design flaws earned the vehicle the derogatory name "dinosaur". However, development continued and a second model, the Boirault No2, was created. The vehicle was the progenitor of later tanks.
