Vojenský opravárenský podnik 027 Trenčín, š.p.

The Military Repair Facility in Trenčín traces its tradition back to 26 December 1918, when the Main Car Workshops for Western Slovakia were established in one of the buildings of the current Slovak Ministry of Defence in Bratislava. In 1919, these workshops were moved to the Masaryk Barracks in Trenčín. The unit initially repaired the equipment of the former Austro-Hungarian army, which was introduced into the Czechoslovak army. After demobilization in 1920, former soldiers became the first civilian employees of the plant. The number of employees at that time was about 50. Gradually, new Czechoslovak automotive equipment of the well-known Škoda, Tatra and Praga brands began to be repaired. In 1922, the plant was renamed Automobilova zbrojovka, Trenčín Branch. In 1936 it was reorganised into Automobilova zbrojovka 2. In 1939, with the establishment of the Slovak state, the unit was first renamed Automobilova zbrojovka and then in 1940 to Vojenský automobilový park.

During World War II, the unit repaired cars, motorcycles and bicycles from the armament of the Slovak Army. In 1941, the unit was renamed the Sborový automobilový park. Two years later it was moved to the newly built barracks in Zlatovce. On 10 April 1945, Trenčín was occupied by units of the Romanian and Soviet armies. After repairing the damages caused at the end of World War II, repair activities for the needs of the Czechoslovak armed forces started again. To a large extent, the repairs involved trophy equipment from almost 30 different manufacturers.

In 1952, the plant was modernised by installing new machine tools and production (or repair) technologies. In the early 1950s, the main range of repairs consisted of Studebacker trucks, Tatra 128 and later Tatra 805. During the 1960s, the Trenčín plant began repairing Soviet-made cars of the ZiL, GAZ and MAZ types for the Czechoslovak People's Army. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Zlatovce Automobile Repair Plant continued to repair armoured personnel carriers and their derivatives on OT-64, OT-65 and BTR-60 chassis. At the same time, he began producing (or rebuilding) mobile workshop vehicles on the Praga V3S chassis.

The Military Repair Enterprise 027 Trenčín was founded on 1 July 1989 by the decision of the Minister of National Defence of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic on the basis of the founding charter No. 1105-84 of 23 June 1989. On 1.7.1989 all assets, rights and liabilities of the dissolved production and economic organization AOZ Zlatovce were transferred to VOP 027. In 1993 the company employed 583 persons.

In 1993, VOP 027 won a tender for the production and delivery of observation towers for UNPROFOR units operating in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. The company also carried out overhauls of armoured personnel carriers OT-64 and OT-65 for the needs of the UNPROFOR mission. As a result of the division of the federation and the establishment of the Slovak Republic, the plant's product range was expanded in 1994 to include repairs of tracked military equipment (tanks of the T-55 and T-72 series), infantry fighting vehicles BVP-1 and BVP-2) and overhaul of vehicles UAZ-452 and UAZ-469. VOP 027's activities also extended to the civilian sector, where it sought to offer mobile workshops to provide field repairs of construction equipment during the construction of water works, highways or maintenance of gas pipelines. The company's employees also performed service work on Slovak Army equipment deployed in UN foreign missions (UNPROFOR, UNTAES, UNMEE, UNFICYP) and later NATO (KFOR, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom).

VOP 027 was ready as the main gestor to realize the modernization of the T-72M2 tank for the needs of the Slovak army and its possible deliveries abroad. However, this never happened. The plant at least carried out repairs and minor modifications of the decommissioned tanks T-55AM2 for a foreign customer. At the turn of the millennium, the repair, production and development programme of the plant consisted of the following main areas:
- repairs of tanks T-55, T-72 as well as infantry fighting vehicles BVP-1, BVP-2 and their modifications throughout the repair structure
- repairs of wheeled equipment of various modifications, from passenger off-road vehicles to armoured personnel carriers
- modernization of tanks T-72, armored personnel carriers OT-90 and infantry fighting vehicles BVP-1 and BVP-2
- development and production of mobile workshop equipment for repair of tank and automotive equipment in field conditions
- supply of stands, test equipment and tools for tank and automotive repair
- training of workshop specialists in the company or at the customer's site abroad
- supply of spare parts for tank and wheeled vehicles
- supply of stationary and mobile simulators for the training of specialists for tank and wheeled vehicles

Around 2003, the company provided technical assistance to foreign partners by Slovak workers in Eritrea. VOP 027 also focused on the development and production of military workstations built into ISO 1C containers. By the end of 2008, it had produced approximately 350 containers in 47 modifications for the Slovak Army. In 2003, a container water treatment plant MÚPV 5 was delivered to the Slovak State Material Reserves Administration. At that time, 445 employees worked in the company.

Since 2005, the company has been producing light armoured vehicles Alligator. On 6 January 2006, Vojenský opravárenský podnik 027 Trenčín, š.p. was transformed into Vojenský opravárenský podnik Trenčín, a.s. The experience gained from the production of the Alligator was put to good use in the subsequent production of some components for Polish wheeled infantry fighting vehicles Rosomak.

In 2009, LOBB Banská Bystrica, a.s. and the technical institute VTU Liptovský Mikuláš, a.s. were incorporated into the structure of VOP Trenčín. The operation in Liptovský Mikuláš ceased its main activity on 31 December 2011.

Declining defence spending also had a negative impact on the economic situation of Slovak state repair companies. Although the need for repairs of military equipment of the Slovak army exceeded the capacity capabilities of the military repair companies, the financial situation of the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic allowed to allocate funds for only the most necessary repairs and maintenance of military equipment and weapons. Due to the continuous decline of production in the field of repairs, the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic as the sole shareholder decided to start the process of selecting a strategic partner during 2013. The Czech company STV GROUP a.s. and the Slovak company MSM Martin, a.s. joined the tender. The Slovak company was the winner of the tender. VOP Trenčín subsequently ceased its production activities on 31 December 2013 and leased its movable and immovable assets at the Trenčín and Banská Bystrica plants to MSM Martin, a.s. for a period of 20 years from 1 January 2014.

As of 31 August 2014, Vojenský opravárenský podnik Trenčín, a.s. was deleted from the Slovak Commercial Register as a result of its merger with the Trenčín Aircraft Repair Plant. As of 1 September 2014, its legal successor became Letecké opravovne Trenčín, a.s..
