JP233 is a container ammunition developed jointly by Great Britain and the USA in the years 1977-1982, when the American side withdrew from the project (in the prototype testing phase) and the development was completed under British direction. The container was developed for use on aircraft F-111, Tornado, Jaguar and Harrier, and due to the different payloads, there were several variants of use. The system itself consisted of short bomb cartridges and longer mine cartridges. The aircraft F-111 was able to carry on the wing hangers two pieces from each cartridge, Jaguar and Harrier only one pair of one cartridge. The aircraft Tornado could carry a pair of complete containers next to each other on the hull hangers, with a mine box in front and a bomb box in the back (some sources indicate the opposite configuration).

The cartridges were designed for use with various submunitions, but the most commonly used combination of anti-concrete bombs SG357 (30 pcs. 26 kg) designed to destroy airport runways and anti-personnel mines HB876 (215 pcs each 2.4 kg), whose task was to subsequently mine the destroyed area and thus make reconstruction more difficult. Both types of submunitions were uncontrolled, stabilized and braked by parachutes.
The containers were used by the British Air Force in 1991 during the Iraq war.

In 1986, on the basis of JP233, the development of a new, lighter and simpler CMD18 container began, which enabled the use of 18 SG357 bombs. Until the dismantling of the production line in 1995, 266 pieces of JP233 and 5 pieces of CMD18 were produced.
