Submarine U-505 was captured 4. June 1944 in Mauritania american warships of Task force 22.3 consisting of the escort aircraft carrier USS Guadalcanal (CVE-60) destroyers USS Pillsbury (DE-133), USS Chatelain (DE-149), USS Flaherty (DE-135), USS Jenks (DE-665) and USS Pope (DE-134) after it was severely damaged by the depth charges USS Chatelain (DE-149) and postřelováním two aircraft, - Grumman F4F Wildcat.
The submarine was towed to the port of Port Royal in Bermuda. The encryption device Enigma, together with the encoder books have been shipped to the Uk and analysed in the kryproanalytickém institute at Bletchley Park. The submarine was subjected to thorough testing, valuable were, in particular, information about the acoustic torpedoes Zaunkönig T-5, which allowed to develop effective countermeasures.
The captivity of the submarine was subject to strict secrecy - the crew was interned separately from other German prisoners of war in Camp Ruston in Louisiana and she was allowed to contact with the representatives of the Red cross. The Kriegsmarine declared the members of the crew dead and informed in the sense of their family.
