Execution of the assassins and their associates
[from left Mary Surratt (42-45 years old), Lewis Powell (21 years old), David Herold (23 years old) and George Atzerodt (30 years old)](see photo 1)
The execution took place after 1pm on 7 July 1865 and was watched by around a thousand people, including members of the government, soldiers, friends and relatives of the condemned. At 1:15 p.m. the condemned were led to the gallows (see photo 2) and their ankles, knees and hands were tied together at their sides. At the urging of Lewis Powell, Reverend Gillette thanked the prisoners for their kindness and said a prayer for Powell's soul. With tears in his eyes, Powell uttered, Mrs. Surratt is innocent. She does not deserve to die with us. The prisoners were asked to take a few steps towards the nooses. They were given white bags to put on their heads after the nooses were put on them (see photo 3). Powell told the executioner Rath through the bag, Thank you, goodbye. Rath clapped his hands and the soldiers knocked down the supports (see photo 4).
Surratt and Atzerodt were instantly dead, but Powell and Harold were still reeling for nearly 5 minutes. According to eyewitness testimony, Lewis Powell's body was thrashing so wildly that his legs got so high about once or twice that they were almost in a sitting position. This made Mary Surratt the first woman executed by the United States government (see photo 5).
After 30 minutes, their bodies were cut down, placed in gun cases, names written on paper to be placed in a glass container in the coffin, and buried next to John Wilkes Booth against the east wall of the prison yard.
The bodies were moved to another location in the prison in 1867 and then in February 1869, at the insistence of the Booth and Surratt families, the bodies were returned to the families.
But for some mysterious reason, Powell's head was missing from the body, which was not discovered until 1992 in a collection of Native American skulls, and after several tests and the discovery of its authenticity, it was given to Powell's next of kin, 70-year-old great-niece Helen Alderman (see photo 6). The skull was buried next to Lewis's mother, Caroline Patience Powell, in Geneva Cemetery.
