From October 1944 more than 400 000 men from 33 divisions army Group North surrounded in the baltic Courland troops the Leningrad front. Hitler refused to comply with a requirement of the chief of staff OKH Heinz Guderian. on a maritime evacuation of the encircled units, which could be used in defense of Germany. The troops of the Wehrmacht, the Waffen-SS, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine, closed in the so-called Kurische pocket, should continue to defend the area and protect the submarine base of the Kriegsmarine along the coast of the Baltic sea. 25. January 1945 the army Group North was renamed to the a Group of armies Kuronsko.
Ground forces of the Wehrmacht were especially in the second half of the war forced to flexibly respond to crisis situations through the creation of independent special purpose tactical groups - fighting groups (Kampfgruppen). This tactic has proved successful also in the defense of units in the kurische pocket against the permanent attempts of the Red army on their destruction (from October 1944 to the end of the war took place against a Group of armies Kuronsko a total of 6 soviet offensive operations).
One of the most famous German combat groups of this period was the Tank brigade Kuronsko formed during January 1945. Originally bore the name of the Tank reconnaissance group of Kuronsko (Panzer-Aufklärungs-Gruppe Kurland), which was subordinated to the Granátnický assault battalion Kuronsko. Only later received a brigade headquarters from the Panzer regiment 29 and motorized and armored formations from the 4. and 11. panzer division and 4. police division panzer grenadiers of the SS. It had two sections of the tank destroyers with 30 machines Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t) Hetzer, anti-aircraft section, two motorizovanými ženijními sections, artillery batteries, three light and two těškými houfnicemi, parts of the Heavy tank section 510, tank platoon with kořistními T-34, furthermore, two tank recon sections (Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 12 (gepanzert) and Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 14), each with five light armored reconnaissance vehicles Sd.Kfz.222, four connecting Sd.Kfz.223, forty-five Sd.Kfz.250 and forty-two Sd.Kfz.251.
Already during the formation of the brigade with its units engage in defensive battles. The brigade as a whole then at the end of February had a hard struggle in Latvia in the vicinity of the city Liepāja, where she helped fend off soviet attempts to breakthrough the defensive line. For outstanding performance in command of the brigade received the colonel Horst von Usedom 28. march Oak sprig to the Knight's cross.
Until the very end of the war were then brigade units deployed to support the infantry.
Tank brigade Kuronsko capitulated together with the other units in the Kurische pocket 8. may 1945.
