55. IAP (pd 7.3.1942 16th GIAP)
One of the most successful regiments was based in June 1941 near the town of Belcy (47°45'40.35 "N 27°54'42.23 "E)on the Prut River near the border with Romania. The regiment's armament was varied, with biplanes I-153, proven I-16 and new MiG-3 machines. From the beginning of the war it was a very busy regiment on this section of the front. It fought over Rostov and Novocherkassk. In the spring of 1942, when it became "Guard", it re-equipped itself with Yak-1 fighters and subsequently fought as part of the Southern Front until early 1943. During this period he was withdrawn from the front to rearm with La-5 fighters, but this never happened. The unit was instead given Bell P-39 machines and in April 1943 became involved in fighting over Kubani on the North Caucasus Front. She participated in operations over the Sea of Azov as part of the Southeastern Front, as well as the liberation of Donbas. From late 1943, the regiment operated with the 4th Ukrainian Front over Crimea and Moldavia, returning to where the war began. As part of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, he was involved in the Yas-Kishinev operation in July 1944. After that, the entire 9th GIAD was transferred to the 1st Ukrainian Front and deployed to the Lviv-Sandomierz operation. The regiment remained with this front until the end of the war and participated in the advance to Berlin. At the end of the war, the pilots of the regiment claimed 697 kills.
