lieutenant general Sir John Spencer Ewart was born in stredovekej dedinke Tatenhill (grófstvo Staffordshire) ležiacej in hlbokom valley approximately 5.6 km west-high-west of the Burton-on-Trent in škótskej a military family as the second son. Father was british general Sir John Alexander Ewart, mother Frances Stone. His father pôsobil as aide-de-camp (špeciálny military poradca) pre kráľovnú Viktóriu and was a veteran of the Krymskej the army (1853-1856) and Obliehania Laknáu (1857) during Indian povstania (where pri Kánpure brought about ľavú hand). His old father was lieutenant general John Frederick Ewart and prastarí otcovia boli diplomats Joseph Ewart, and Sir Charles Brisbane. Between his strýkov belonged to lieutenant general Charles Brisbane Ewart and vice admiral Charles Joseph Frederick Ewart. University of the Vyššej school in Marlborough (Marlborough College), and then nastúpil on the Kráľovské military kolégium by Sandhurst. Štúdium ended in 1881, when bol zaradený to regiment the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.

In 1891 sa married so Susan Frances Platt, ktora well pochádzala from a military family (father major George William Platt). Mali one dcéru, Marion Frances Ewartovú (released sa in the year 1919, the husband of captain Ian Munro, Cameron Highlanders).

Zomrel in 1930 vo svojom obľúbenom chair about the age of 69 years in Langholm (grófstvo Dumfriesshire).
