Theodore Roosevelt was born on 27. October 1858 in New York City in the family of a wealthy financier of Dutch origin. He was brought up by private tutors, and as a boy toured Europe and visited Egypt. He learned German and French. From childhood also played sports, especially devoted himself to boxing and although he was asthmatic, he maintained a good physical condition throughout his life. He studied natural science at Harvard, and in 1880 he married the daughter of a banker, Alice Hathaway Lee, who four years later died in childbirth of their daughter.

His political career began in 1882 as a member of the Republicans in the state of New york. In 1886 unsuccessfully ran for mayor of New york and the second time he married with the girlfriend of his sister Edith To a. Carovou. In 1889 he became a member of the commission for state administration from 1895 he commanded the municipal police New York. In that time he became friend of senator Lodge, and he helped him to the position of deputy minister for the navy. There, Roosevelt felt at home, as on ships and the navy was interested in already from studies, when written and in 1884 he published his first book the Naval war of 1812. He was a supporter of building a mighty war fleet, and lobbied for a declaration of war on Spain. When war in April of 1898 broke out, resigned his office and as a volunteer in the rank of lieutenant colonel went off to fight with a unit of men to Cuba. His bravery in battle brought him promotion to colonel of the popularity that helped him win in the elections of the governor of the state of New York. Roosevelt was betting on the factor of naval strength (the so-called policy of "gunboat") and doubled the war fleet, he undertook in the years 1907 – 09 non-exhaustive trip around the world.
