Brief history
The Kharkiv Tank Repair Plant (Kharkivskiy бронетанковий ремонтний завод, ХБТЗ) converted a T-64A or type B tank into a BTR-64K demonstrator (sometimes referred to as BMP-K-64 (BMP-K-64) or BMPT-K64 (BMPT-K-64)) in 2005. The development of this vehicle was a private undertaking by the Kharkiv Tank Repair Plant, which anticipated that by converting tanks to transporters it would achieve a reduction in the number of vehicles in storage.

One of the tank conversion projects envisaged the use of a wheeled chassis with a two-stroke diselmotor 5TDF, which would power an energy generator coupled to hydromotors, or electric motors in the wheel hubs. The vehicle control system was identical to tracked vehicles. That is, the braking of a group of wheels on the left/right side of the vehicle was used to turn the BTR-64K demonstrator.

The construction and testing of the BTR-64K demonstrator confirmed the predicted capabilities of the vehicle. Exactly when development work on the hydraulically powered vehicle was stopped is unknown, but it is believed to have been due to lack of funding. Other sources suggest that this was due to the Russian-Ukrainian hybrid war in the Donbas.

In the official catalogues of the UkrOboronProm concern, the BTR-64K vehicle was still in the 2016-2017 vintage and has not been offered since that date. What happened to the demonstrator is unknown.
