The division was set up 14. August 1942 in the form of a standard panzer division and, subordinated to the the North headquarters. In April 1943 it was reorganized and given a new task – now had to develop specialized armored remedies for deployment during landing and similar operations (the so-called Hobart's Funnies). These funds should also be tested, and its members should handle their control and deployment. Not but be a mere training formations, which would take the trained crew of the other armored units, but divisions operating. However, from the beginning, it was foreseen, that its individual components will be awarded according to the needs of the other bodies. The division participated in the training of other units in the control tanks, the Sherman DD, including the canadian and american. From April 1943 to fall of the division to the Command of the domestic forces, from may 1944 subordinate to the 21. the group of armies. Part of the division participated in operation NEPTUNE, the division as such was in north-west Europe deployed since August. Its members have gone through fight in the mouth of the river Scheldt, participated in cleaning Rourského triangle and also participated in crossing the Rhine and the Elbe. In August 1945 the division was canceled.
