On 5 October 1943, the Chief of the Artillery Committee of the GAU was presented with a proposal for a high-performance 122 mm OBM-50 gun on a platform using the chassis of a heavy tank KV-1S and a superstructure from a self-propelled gun SU-152. Work on the project was carried out at Perm's OKB-172 under the direction of M. Y. Cirulnikov, chief designer for the field of ground artillery.
The gun itself had a muzzle velocity of up to 1,000 m/s and three versions were submitted.

Version "A" had a barrel length of 8,566 mm (70.2 caliber), the maximum pressure was 2,670 kg/cm2. It was very similar in design to the A-19 cannon of 120 mm caliber.

On October 28, 1943, the remaining two versions of the OBM-50 cannon were introduced.

Version I - barrel length of 8390 mm (68.7 caliber), chamber lengthened to 990 mm.
Version II - barrel shortened to 7430 mm (60.9 caliber), chamber was also 990 mm. The maximum pressure was increased to 3000 kg/cm2.

The GAU Artillery Committee issued their opinion and even added their own design for the fourth version of the OBM-50. In this case, the barrel length was 7440 mm and the maximum pressure was increased to 3200 kg/cm2. In his opinion, he expressed the requirements for the shortest possible barrel with the smallest possible diameter, and steel of strength class 0-70 was to be used. A maximum pressure of between 2800-3000 kg/m2 would be applicable.

The version II was the most suitable for these requirements. At the time of writing, production of the SU-152 was being discontinued, and so the requirement for a lafetation in its successor, the ISU-152, was dropped. The requirement to finish the prototype was for delivery by January 25, 1944.

Around this version, a proposal was made to fit the 152 mm OBM-43 gun howitzer into the same platform. The designation of this self-propelled version was OBM-53.

However, development work was halted. Whether it proceeded to prototype production is unknown to me. It was a type that was not planned to be produced in large numbers. Despite many projects for different versions of the new self-propelled guns, production of the ISU-152 was ultimately preferred. A competing project, the M-21 of Plant No. 172, was the same.
