М109А5Ö (some sources use the designation M109A5Öe, or M109A5O) is an Austrian modernization of the M109A2/M109A3/M109A5 self-propelled howitzers first introduced in 1994 using the M109A2 howitzer chassis.
The modernisation mainly includes the installation of the Austrian NORA (Navigations-, Orientierungs- und Richtanlage) inertial navigation system, a new EAFLS (Elektronische Artillerie Feuerleitsystem) automated fire control system also of Austrian origin, a mechanical charging system and hydraulic breech actuator developed by the Austrian company Intertechnik Linz, new wiring (originally from Switzerland), and a number of other modifications. These changes allowed the rate of fire to be increased to 3 shots per 15 seconds, or 10 shots per minute, and also allowed the use of new ammunition designed for the M109A6 Paladin howitzers.
A total of 80 M109A51) howitzers (54 units in 1998-2002) and M109A2/M109A32) howitzers (26 units in 2002-2007) were upgraded to the M109A5Ö standard between 1998 and 2007.
In addition to the howitzer itself, the fire control vehicle ReStPz (Rechenstellenpanzer) is part of the fire control unit. A total of 41 units were created around 2000 by converting M109A2/M109A32) howitzers, where the armament was removed and an EAFLS automated fire control system with communications and an additional electrical generator was placed in the armoured superstructure. The crew of this vehicle consists of 6 persons.
After 2010, as a result of the downsizing of the Austrian Armed Forces, most of the upgraded howitzers and fire control systems were put into storage. In 2017, 35 self-propelled howitzers, 10 fire control vehicles and 2 driver-mechanic training vehicles were sold to Latvia for a total value of €6 million. The howitzers were delivered in the period from 01.10.2017 to October 2018. On 18.05.2021, information about another contract between Austria and Latvia for the sale of 18 howitzers worth €2 million was published. Thus, Latvia would operate 53 M109A5Ö howitzers after the deliveries are made.
Note.:
1) shipped from USA in 1997-1998
2) taken from surplus British occupation forces in Germany in 1993-1994 for a total of 51 M109A2 howitzers and 50 M109A3 howitzers[/i][/i:aaaa
