| Levante Army Headquarters was a military formation belonging to the People's Army of the Spanish Republic, which fought during the Spanish Civil War. Levante Army Headquarters was established on August 19, 1937 from XIII. and XIX. Army Corps, which joined it. Levante's army headquarters ranged from Rilla to Sierra de Calomarde and Frías de Albarracín, covering various sectors of the Teruel front. In December 1937, the Levante Army Headquarters was in charge of the Republican offensive in Teruel, where he managed to conquer the city of Teruel after intense fighting. However, this initial victory eventually turned into a defeat with the Francoist counteroffensive that occupied the city of Teruel. From April 1938, he had to face Frank's offensive on the Levante front, which aimed to conquer Valencia. On this date, the formation was assigned to the recently formed Central Region Army Group (GERC), under the command of General José Miaja. In June 1938, Levante Army Command engulfed Maneuver Command forces. From that moment on, the Levante Army Command directly subordinated five army corps and others in reserve. The fighting on the Levantine front was very intense between April and July 1938. On June 14, 1938, Castellón de la Plana fell into Franco's hands, which pushed Franco's forces about 80 kilometers from Valencia. At that time, up to six army corps belonging to the Levantine army were in line, protected by the XYZ line of defense. Fighting in the Levant peaked between July 18 and 23, during which the Franco attackers suffered numerous losses. The offensive taken further north by the Ebro army stopped all Franco attacks. The Levantine army ceased to exist at the end of March 1939, which coincided with the end of the war. |
