What we know so far:


- In a televised speech at 5:55 Moscow time, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in the eastern Donbas. He described the operation as an act of self-defense and called on Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms. The aim, he said, is not the occupation of Ukraine, but its 'demilitarisation and denationalisation'. He also threatened an immediate reaction in the event of foreign intervention against Russia.





- Ukraine said there have been missile attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. Ukraine claims to have shot down 5 Russian planes and one helicopter, Russia denies this claim. Targets in the area of the cities of Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Kharkiv were hit, Kramatorsk, Dnipro, Odesa, Mariupol.

- Convoys of Russian troops entered Ukrainian territory from several directions - from Belarus north of Kiev, from Crimea in the south, and through the separatist republics of Luhansk and Donetsk.

- Ukraine declares martial law, closes airspace to civilian flights


- Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called for devastating sanctions against Russia, including disconnection from the SWIFT interbank system.

- U.S. President Joe Biden has let it be known that this war will bring catastrophic casualties (it is not clear whether directly in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia or by involving other countries?) A number of other European politicians, including EU and Czech officials, have condemned Russian aggression and also mentioned tougher sanctions. A Ukrainian military aircraft An-26 crashed near Kiev between the villages of Zhukivtsi and Trypilljav in the Obukhov district. Five people, out of fourteen present on board, did not survive. The machine was probably shot down by Russian forces.

The Ukrainian aircraft Sukhoi Su-27 was intercepted in Romanian airspace at 6:15 a.m. by two General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft of the Romanian Air Force and escorted to land at 7:05 a.m. at the 95th Air Base in Bacău. The pilot turned himself in to Romanian authorities.

Another of the Russian helicopters believed to be attacking Hostomel Airport crashed into the Dnieper River near Vyshorod. It was most likely a Ka-50. The pilot ejected from the machine.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has released, among other things, images of soldiers captured by members of the 93rd Independent Mechanized Brigade. According to their markings, they belonged to the 423rd Guards Motorized Artillery Regiment.

They have been fighting in the vicinity of Kharkov since the morning, where, according to information from the Ukrainian General Staff, the defenders destroyed 4 attack tanks. In the fighting on the approaches to the city Sumy the defenders report at least 15 destroyed Russian tanks T-72 using PTRS [url]=/topic/view/27073] Javelin[/url] and one tank using PTRS Saab NLAW. Local sources say that Russian technology, despite the resistance of Ukrainian forces, entered the city center shortly after 5:00 pm, but is still fighting in the suburbs.



In the afternoon, Russian troops also entered a special zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Units of the Ukrainian National Guard, which guard the area where radioactive waste is stored, are defending themselves.

American tankers circling over Romania and Poland

The Russian Air Force lost the Antonov An-26 reg. RF-36074, v.no. 7510, which crashed at an unknown location. It is not known if anyone died in the crash. Unconfirmed sources claim that the aircraft should have been shot down by Ukrainians.

The Hostomel airport appears to have come under the control of Ukrainian forces again before 20:00 on 24.02.2022. The 4th Immediate Reaction Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine operated there against Russian paratroopers for several hours.





According to other sources, transport planes with members of the Pskov 76th Guards Strike Airborne Division should have already been prepared at the Pskov airport for transfer to the occupied airfield.

How the air traffic over Ukraine looked (or rather didn't look) today.

According to the source en.defence-ua.com, 60 of the 90 Russian battalion tactical groups preparing to attack Ukraine have so far intervened in the fighting. The main effort of the Russian troops is to blockade Kiev and create a land corridor between Crimea and Transnistria, thus cutting Ukraine off from access to the sea.

Video zachycující útok posádky bitevního vrtulníku Kamov Ka-52 na letiště Hostomel, kde je vidět, že dráha byla zatarasena několika vozidly, což zapříčinilo nemožnost jejich využití ruskými Iljušiny Il-76. Ke konci videa je vrtulník zasažen a posádka úspěšně přistává na poli a stroj opouští (zřejmě pak byla zajata).
