Special Use Tank Company 66 armed with a mix of the latest tanks Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G and looted Soviet tanks, was expanded on 30 May 1942 to Tank Detachment for Special Use 66, becoming its 1st company and retaining the German machines.

The newly formed 2nd Company took over all Soviet captured tanks and added light Pz.Kpfw. I Ausf. F and Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. J. The detachment was preparing for the invasion of Malta (Operation Hercules), but in mid-June 1942 received new orders to move to the Eastern Front, where its companies were to reinforce the rear area security units of Army Group North and Army Group Centre.

On 14 August 1942, the 2nd Company of the Special Use Tank Detachment 66 reinforced the rear area securing units of Army Group Center under the Commanding General of the rear area securing units and Army Group Center rear area command.
The company was deployed in the heaviest fighting in March 1943 with 267th Infantry Division at the town of Bolshaya-Kamenka west of Stalingrad, where it suffered heavy casualties.
On 18 March 1944 it was transferred to 1st Ski Brigade and renamed 4th Company, Heavy Ski Battalion 1.
