It has no significant oil and gas deposits in its own neighbourhood. There is only the North Sea and the Gronigen field.
The pipeline infrastructure built during the Soviet era thus puts Russia in an advantageous position. The idea that a competitor might emerge to reduce Europe's dependence on Russia makes the Kremlin nervous and any attempts are quickly nipped in the bud."
