Injury Marks
The insignia for wounds were introduced on 14 July 1942 by Decree No.2039 of the State Defence Committee. All soldiers of the Red Army who were wounded in combat with the enemy or were wounded by the enemy in the performance of their duties on the fronts of the Patriotic War were given the right to wear a special distinguishing emblem.
Each single light or heavy wound was marked with a separate patch, distinguished by colour depending on the nature of the injury. In order to be allowed to wear this badge, it was necessary to present a "certificate of injury" issued by the military medical institute and an extract from the unit's orders.
Each injury was marked with a rectangular ribbon 43 mm long and 5-6 mm wide. In the case of a light injury the ribbon was dark red, in the case of a heavy one - gold. The wound insignia was sewn onto a khaki-coloured backing rectangle, which was pinned on the right side of the chest at the level of the middle button of the uniform, usually 8-10 mm above the insignia. If the uniform had a pocket, it was placed above the right breast pocket in a direction from the centre to the inner edge of the pocket.
