Survived the sinking of two U-boats in two days

When the brand-new U-476 set sail on her maiden combat voyage on May 20, 1944, many of the crew had no idea that for most of them it would be their last. After four days, the submarine was spotted in the early hours of the morning by a seaplane Catalina from the 210 Squadron RAF and dropped bombs on her, hitting her at 7:18am and severely damaging her. Fortunately, U-990 of Hubert Nordheimer came to the submarine's rescue, saving 21 sailors, including Commander Niethmann. U-476 was scuttled the following day, but due to bad weather, 34 crew members were killed. U-990 thus set sail with the survivors on board. But the marityrium did not end there, the following day U-990 was also found by a bomber B-24 from 59th RAF Squadron and also sunk. A total of 23 men were killed in the sinking, including 3 from U-476, and 51 survivors, including 18 men from U-476 and both captains. The survivors were then picked up by the German patrol vessel V 5901. Both commanders, Nordheimer and Niethmann, subsequently returned to Germany where they were given command of the new German submarines Type XXI. Both survived the war.
