Stíhací squadrona VF-201 Hunters byla založena v červnu 1970, jako část CVWR-20, během reorganizace Naval Reserve Force.


Hunters začali svoji existenci s letouny F-8 Crusader. Squadrona používala stroje F-8 do února 1976, kdy se přeškolila na F-4 Phantom II. Squadrona létala s F-4N v letech 1976 až 1984 a s F-4S od roku 1984 do prosince 1986.

Na začátku roku 1987 squadrona obdržela své první stroje F-14A Tomcat. Během následujících šesti měsíců se squadrona přeškolovala na nové F-14 a výcvik ukončila kvalifikačními zkouškami na palubě USS FORRESTAL (CV 59).


V roce 1993 na základě rozhodnutí o snižování počtu ozbrojených sil byla squadrona reorganizována a prodělala výcvik v útocích na pozemní cíle. Od tohoto okamžiku se squadrona začala specializovat na bitevní mise. VF-201 se stala první squadronou, která začala používat na svých Tomcatech minovou munici.
