Brief history:
In 1934 the japanese army needed for their units of the new fighter, which would replace the already obsolescent fighters Nakajima Type 91. After the rejection of the jednoplošného prototype the Kawasaki Ki-5, become the problem of replacing the Type 91 is already urgent.
By entering the competition were subpoenaed the two companies, which were active in the production of aviation equipment. Factory Kawasaki Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha Kokuki, had to design the project dvouplošné fighters Ki-10 and Nakajima Hikoki Kabushiki Kaisha got the same assignment, but the concept of the aircraft designated the Ki-11 was supposed to be jednoplošná. The designers of the factory Nakajima engineers Tei Koyama and Sinroku Inoue were inspired by the then "hot" news of america the Boeing P-26. Total factory Nakajima built from April to December 1935 the four prototypes, with a fourth prototype was the most advanced. Construction of aeroplanes was mixed, all-metal monocoque fuselage, the wings were covered with panels of plywood and the wings was covered with canvas. The engine was Nakajima Kotobuki 3 with the power of 710 horsepower, three prototypes (1., 2. 4.) should two-blade propeller, a third prototype had a propeller trojlistou polohovatelnou. The chassis was solid faired.
In general it can be said that the project of the Ki-11 was structurally designed primarily for speed and competitive Kawasaki Ki-10 again with regard to the maximum dexterity. Japanese army air force chose maneuverable Ki-10 and the Nakajima Ki-11 after he has fulfilled the role of nátlakového of the aeroplane and after the adoption of the Kawasaki Ki-10 in the arsenal of the army air force, left the factory Nakajima unused prototypes. The factory tried to offer aircraft and foreign customers from southeast Asia, but this business of the negotiations was unsuccessful. The first three prototypes of the then used to test various types of engines and kits, the fourth prototype was converted to AN-1, received the civilian designation J-BBHA and was sold a print of the group Asahi Shimbun, where with him the pilot Mosaburo Niino 31 12. 1935 established the record in the maximum speed achieved by the civilian plane. On the route Tokyo - Osaka reached an average speed of 398,1 km/h. This record was broken less than two years later ( in march 1937) aircraft Mitsubishi Kamikaze (army designation Ki-15), also this plane was in the property of the group Asahi Shimbun..
