キ4九四式侦察机 / Kyūyon-shiki teisatsuki / army reconnaissance aircraft Type 94

History:
Rikugun Koku Hombu in 1933 called air factory Nakajima Hikoki To.To. to proposed and made a prototype reconnaissance aircraft, which should replace the obsolete reconnaissance aircraft the Kawasaki Type 88-I or Kawasaki Type 88-II and slightly more modern Mitsubishi Type 92. The technical department demanded after konstruktérech speed and agility at the level of the then fighter aircraft and in addition had to be a plane capable of direct cooperation with ground forces and tactical bombing. Chief designer Shigejiro Owada his team chose jedenapůlplošník with the elliptical shape of the wings, the fuselage structure was metal, and on it were the cover panels of the bakelizované plywood. For the drive has been selected radial devítiválec Nakajima Ha-8 Type 94-Even with the maximum power of 640 horsepower. The job oversaw the army engineer Ing. Nairo Ando.
The aircraft was completed in the spring of 1934, and in April it started to test the test pilots, kpt. Saburo Amakasu and kpt. Kiyoshi Shinomiya. After the removal of the "childhood" diseases, some of which have been serious as the instability and worse maneuverability, the aircraft was in 1934 accepted into service. Nakajima Hikoki To.To. produced this aircraft until 1939. The production is also engaged mukadenská factory Manshu-Koku To.To. that produced a particular version of the Ki-4 Otsu, which was equipped with, among other things, additional křídelními pylons.
Directly in combat formations in China has been tried mounting two floats originating from the float of the airplane Nakajima E4N2, this attempt ended ingloriously, the weight of the aircraft and the air resistance mounted floats was so great, that the plane was useless.
On the contrary, a good achievement of field workshops was an amplification of the defensive armament, when he was a simple machine gun Type 89 replaced by a machine gun duplication, this modification was later supplied directly by the factory.

Operational deployment:
Japanese army air force used the Ki-4 for direct support of ground units in China. The next task, which is this type of well-handled, was a survey of the junction and the courier service and the management of artillery fire. This aircraft was osádkami very popular and despite the relatively large losses, which, however, were understandable with regard to the implementation of the above tasks.
