He was born on May 20, 1916 in the town of Kamyshin in the Volgograd (Stalingrad) region in the family of a war invalid. His father died soon after his return from war and his mother, who worked as a cleaner, took care of her three sons alone. After school, Alexei trained as a welder and then went to work at a factory in the town of Komsomolsk in the Amur-Khabarovsk region. There he also took pilot courses at the local aeroclub.
He joined the Red Army in 1937, served in the frontier unit in Sakhalin, and graduated from the military aviation school in Bataysk in 1940 with the rank of lieutenant. He was at the front from August 1941, first fighting at Odessa, later with the 296th IAP at Krivoy Rog. In the winter he was transferred to the 580th IAPNorthwest Front. In all units he fought mostly on I-16 aircraft.
In early 1942 he shot down a German transport aircraft Ju 52 and in March he added three more kills to his account. With badly wounded legs, he crawled for 18 days through the snow-covered countryside back across the front to his unit. There, because of advanced snow, both of his shins had to be amputated, but by force of will Lieutenant Mareshev gradually learned to walk, dance and fly with prostheses. In June 1943, he returned to the front and in Battle of Kursk represented the squadron commander 63rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (GIAP) at the rank of senior lieutenant. The unit at that time used La-5 machines. He was awarded the Gold Star of the Hero of the USSR for shooting down a total of 11 enemy aircraft on 25 August 1943, and by the end of the war he had a total of 19 victories to his credit.
In 1946, Maj. Gen. Mareshev retired to the reserve for health reasons. He briefly worked as an instructor at a military flight school in Moscow and flew U-2 trainer planes. He often traveled around the country and abroad to tell his story (in 1948 it was made into a movie - The Story of a Real Man starring S. Bondarchuk). He then studied history at the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow and became a candidate of historical sciences. From 1956-83 he worked as secretary and from 1983 vice-chairman of the Soviet War Veterans Committee. He was awarded many orders and medals and became the author of several books on war themes.
He died on 18 May 2001 in Moscow of a heart attack, shortly after celebrating his 85th birthday.
