Since the beginning of the war, the Waffen SS has led the independent development of weapons from the army (Wehrmacht). One of them was an experimental version of the modified Soviet rocket launcher BM-8-48 known as " Katyusha". The captured rocket launchers were handed over to the protectorate companies Zbrojovka Brno and the Škoda plant. Vielfachwerfer was improved copy of the Soviet design of the launcher and the M-8 missile itself caliber 82 mm. The development was led by Rolf Engler, collaborator of Wernher von Braun. The rocket was slightly modified, it had offset the stabilizers by 2 °, which gave the rocket auxiliary rotation and thus improved accuracy. The rocket launcher consisted of two rows of 12 discharge rails 2 meters long. There were two rockets on each rail, a total of 48 rockets. The rocket launcher had a 360 ° measurement and its elevation ranged from 0-37 °. Unlike the Soviet rocket launcher, which was able to launch 48 missiles in 30 seconds, the German version was able to launch this number of missiles in 2-4 seconds. Such a volley was able to create a missile impact zone about 162 meters wide and about 265 meters long. The main effect, even given the small caliber of the missiles, was not the creation of a massive explosive effect, but the creation of a shrapnel death zone, which had a huge effect on the morale of enemy units.

The rocket launcher was mounted on the armored version of the Opel Maultier half-belt, resp. its ammunition version Gleisketten-Lastkraftwagen 2t (Maultier) gp. (Sd.Kfz.4) as Munitionskraftwagen. The first prototype was completed in the spring of 1942. The rocket launcher was mounted on one of the prototypes of the Opel Maultier armored carrier itself, whose initial design of the driver's cab was elongated. However, in the series production of the platform, this design was abandoned and the driver's cab was smaller.

These rocket launchers were used for experimental purposes for comparison with 15 cm Panzerwerfer 42 auf Maultier (Sd.Kfz.4/1). The rocket launcher itself could carry two volleys, i.e. 96 8 cm caliber rockets. The total stockpile of ammunition for one vehicle consisted of 232 highly explosive and 56 smoke missiles, part of which was carried by ammunition vehicles.

The military components were not particularly interested in this rocket launcher, it had small-caliber missiles, so even a small effect on the target. A significant obstacle was the production of these rockets and rocket launchers. Their introduction into production and the production itself would be costly in the situation of German industry. Despite these allegations, representatives of the SS-Waffenamt and Engel himself tried to convince representatives of the Army Waffenamt (WaPrüf 1 I) of their proposal. Eventually, they achieved the creation of an experimental Vielfawerfer-batterie with four self-propelled rocket launchers, which were to undergo combat tests. Testing took place in the central part of the eastern front within the SS-Pol.Rgt. 2, which fought against partisan units. There was a constant opposition from the leadership of the army and the arms authorities against the inefficient production of ammunition for this weapon system. Hitler himself intervened in the dispute, acknowledging the difficulty of introducing new weapons and ammunition into production. Despite some tactical advantages of the 8 cm rocket launcher, the test results were not so convincing. Missiles, for example, had a small range (2500 m, later after modification, the range increased to 6000 m). He required wider testing. The end of 1944 was approaching and the effort to push through this project had no greater chance of success. Although an agreement on the emergency production of 8 cm and 15 cm caliber missiles was concluded at the end of 1944, this was not fully implemented by the end of the war. In total, about 50 pieces of rocket launchers were produced in Zbrojovka Brno, which were mounted on Sd.Kfz.4/1 and French Somua MCL. In the company Explosia produced about 15,000 rockets in its factory in Semtín ( Pardubice). Vielfachwerfer was also called SS-Salvenwerfer, or "Himler's organs" (a paraphrase of the Soviet kites, which the front units called "Stalin's organs").

SS-Vielfachwerfer-Batterie 521 url]

The first unit in which these rocket launchers were included was the [url=/topic/view/116253/Baterie-vicehlavnovych-raketometu-SS-521] SS-Vielfachwerfer-Batterie 521
under the command of SS-Obersturmführer Schänzlina. In 3/1943, the unit had four rocket launchers and one 7.5 cm anti-tank cannon PaK 40. During this period, the unit underwent formation and training as SS-Wfr.Bttr.103 within SS-Wfr.Ers.u.Ausb.Abt. located in Langlingen, near Celle. In 6/1943 they were sent to Kharkov, where they arrived on July 3, 1943. Here the unit was incorporated into the newly formed SS-Wfr.Abt.105 as its 5th battery. As part of the higher unit of the II.SS-Panzerkorps, she was to take part in the summer offensive near Kursk. Here she underwent numerous battles, where the advantage of mobility and high cadence of the rocket launcher was shown. After the end of the offensive, the unit took part in defensive battles in Kharkov. On August 9, 1943, the unit depleted all missile supplies and the next day was withdrawn from the front line. The unit was disbanded and some personnel along with rocket launchers were moved to the SS-Pol.Rgt. 2, where they were to help get acquainted with the technology and training of new crews of the unit. The unit's personnel were withdrawn in 10/1943 for reorganization in Langlingen. The evaluation of the results of combat activities showed the pros and cons of this weapon. High demoralizing effect on enemy units, but compared to the established 15 cm and 21 cm rocket launcher small range and little effect on the target. On November 3, 1943, the commander of the SS-Hauptsturmführer Schänzlin, who was replaced by the SS-Hauptsturmführer Flecke, died in a traffic accident. The battery was to be reorganized and further trained. It was to receive modified ammunition with a longer range. According to the new organizational rules, the unit had six rocket launchers (two platoons of three rocket launchers). The unit was again renamed 1.2.1944 to SS-Vielfachwerfer-Bttr.521. It was ready for combat in the spring of 1944. In 4/1944 the battery was assigned to a higher unit III . (ger.) SS-Panzerkorps sent to the area around the Estonian city of Narva. 30.4.1944 SS-Vielfachwerfer-Bttr.521 /s.Wfr.Rgt.3., which had a standard 15 cm Panzerwerfer 42. At that time, General der Nebeltruppe Ochsner was present at this demonstration, impressed by the shrapnel effect. Beginning 5/1944 SS-Vielfachwerfer-Bttr.521 renamed SS-Wrf.Bttr.103 . The unit took part in the defense of the suburbs around Narva, but after a massive Soviet attack, it was forced to retreat with the entire SS corps. During the defensive battles, it very effectively supported the defending units. The unit was 17.9.1944 incorporated into SS-Panzeraufklärungs-Abteilung 11 "Nordland ". After heavy fighting, the unit ran out of ammunition and the supply of another was not possible. The unit was removed from the state of "Nordland" and personnel incorporated into the state of the unit as infantry. After the fighting in Curonia, the surviving personnel were evacuated to Germany to rebuild the unit. The men were sent to Lubbinchen near Guben, where the unit SS-Werfer-Batterie 521 was renewed and enlarged (received 10 Vielfachwerfer vehicles) . At the end of 2/1945, the battery was sent to the Odry Front, where it was subordinated to the SS-Wfr.Abt.506 from 2.3.1945. This subordination lasted a short time, then the battery became part of V.SS-Gebirgskorps for special operations in Frankfurt an der Oder. After the Soviet main offensive in the direction of Berlin, the unit retreated and was subsequently canceled.

The unit also bore several names, eg Batterie "Schänzlin", SS-Vielfachwerfer-Batterie 521, I./SS-Werfer-Abteilung 103, Batterie "Flecke", or SS-Werfer Gruppe "Flecke".

Vielfachwerfer-Batterie listed in SS-Pol.Rgt.2

The battery in SS-Pol.Rgt.2 was created at the end of 8/1944 in Ukrainian Straight, when the equipment was transferred to its condition and part of the staff SS-Vielfachwerfer-Batterie 521. Staff SS-Vielfachwerfer-Batterie 521 helped with getting acquainted with the armament and training of new crew of rocket launchers until 10/1943, when subsequently, part of the staff moved to reorganize in Germany and part was incorporated into the SS-Pol.Rgt.2. At the end of 10/1943, the unit became involved in anti-partisan operations. In the time frame from the end of 1943 to mid-1944, rocket launchers within the SS-Mehrfachwerfer-Batterie were deployed within the battle group Kampfgruppe von Gottberg and Kampfgruppe Anhalt, which, however, were subordinated to the SS-Pol.Rgt.2. The last mention of the deployment of the SS-Mehrfachwerfer-Batterie within the Kampfruppe Anhalt is dated June 26, 1944 and June 27, 1944. The vehicle condition report states that there are 12 armored self-propelled rocket launchers in the unit.

SS-Pol.Rgt.2 was moved at the end of 6/1944 as part of the Heeresgruppe Mitte to the area around the Belarusian cities Minsk and Grodno. More information is missing.

SS-Werfer-Batterie 512 (Vielfachwerfer)

This test unit was created in the spring of 1944 at the direct request of the SS-Füfrungshauptamt. The unit was equipped with one self-propelled rocket launcher 8 cm Vielfachwer. In the group SS-Kampfgruppe Schill participated in the suppression of the Slovak National Uprising, which broke out on 29.8. 1944. A photo of this vehicle appeared on www.ebay.de a few years ago. On the back of the photo is the date 9/17/1944 and the location Banská Štiavnica.

SS-Vielfachwerfer Batterie 522

The unit was created in 9/1944. It was the renaming of the SS-Werfer-Batterie 512. The unit was assigned to the 6.SS-Panzerarmee and from 16.12.1944 participated in the offensive in the Ardennes. At the beginning of 2/1945, the unit was sent to Hungary. Part of the unit, including one rocket launcher, participated in the fighting to eliminate the Soviet bridgehead on 17.2.1945 - 24.2.1945. However, the self-propelled rocket launcher was soon disabled due to engine failure. The unit was assigned to the state I.SS-Panzerkorps from 1.3.1945 and participated in the spring offensive "Frühlingserwachen", which began on 6.3.1945. At that time, the unit had six self-propelled rocket launchers. After consuming ammunition, the unit could no longer be considered combat-ready. There is no data on the fate of her staff, they probably ended up as infantry.

SS-Vielfachwerfer Batterie 524

The unit was created on March 1, 1945 and consisted of two platoon 8 cm Vielfachwerfer. It was incorporated into 32.SS-Grenadier-Division "30.Januar" and sent to the Oder Front. April 16, 1945 was located in the Vogelsang-Fürstenberg area/ Brandenburg, subsequently after heavy fighting she successfully disengaged and April 23, 1945 retreated Beskow/ Storkow. Additional drive information is not available.

Vielfachwerfer-Zug aus SS-Kampfgruppe "Böhmen und Mähren"

Given the controversy over the use of the name of any unit "Böhmen und Mähren", take this designation as possible mistake. For a more accurate identification of units, it might be appropriate to study Czech sources. Nevertheless, in this source (Nuts & Bolts) there is a chapter on the platoon of these vehicles, which were to belong to the SS-Kampfgruppe "Böhmen und Mähren".The source states that the SS-Kampfgruppe "Böhmen und Mähren" included the SS-Kampfgruppe "Hauptsturmführer Röhwer", which was never formed around 8.4.1945. It was created from the SS-Panzergrenadierschule Kienschlag and SS-Artillerie-Abteilung. In the SS-Artillerie-Abteilung there were platoon with a pair of these self-propelled rocket launchers. Personnel and armaments were to come from the SS-Artillerieschule II Beneschau, the commander of the SS-Artillerie-Abteilung was to be the SS-Obersturmbannführer Curtius. The commander of the platoon of rocket launchers was to be SS-Obersturmführer Krüger. The platoon was to take part in defensive battles in the second half of April 1945 in the area around South Moravia Břeclav (Lundenburg).

Vielfachwerfer-Batterie aus schwere Fallschirm-Werfer-Abteilung I

The Luftwaffe schwere Fallschirm-Werfer-Abteilung I was established in 2/1944 on Regulation XI. Flying corps. The unit commander was Hauptmann Rapräger. The unit's first battery consisted of a pair of squads. In each platoon, three self-propelled rocket launchers were mounted probably on Sd.Kfz.4/1. These six rocket launchers were to come from the Waffen SS, which transferred the vehicles to the Luftwaffe in exchange for training paratroopers from the SS-Fallschirmjäger-Bataillon 500. The unit gained combat readiness in 5/1944 and the following month participated in defensive battles during the landing of the Allies in Normandy. The unit quickly consumed ammunition, and the crews were then likely to engage in combat as ordinary infantry. The fate of the rocket launchers is unknown to me, they were probably destroyed in these battles. Although the unit fought even later and after the transformation and renaming the schwere Fallschirm-Wfr.Abt. 21, there is no mention of these rocket launchers.

Of interest is the conversion of this modification into an anti-aircraft vehicle 2 cm MG151/20 Flakdrilling auf Opel Maultier, which was created during the Prague Uprising. The vehicle was made by Prague insurgents. It was probably one of the SS-Truppenübungsplatz "Beneschau" vehicles, which was deployed as part of the Kampfgruppe Wallenstein to suppress the Prague Uprising in 5/1945.

The same 8 cm rocket launcher was used on the captured French half-track chassis SOMUA MCL - S 303 (f).

Ak is datácia and lokalizácia right it could ísť the vehicle of the SS-Kampfgruppe Schill, o ktorom sa zmieňuje písomný source referred to vyššie. Zaujímavosťou is that the vehicle has predĺženú kabínu, what mali first (prototype ?) machines. We know that takúto kabínu malo vehicle with 8cm raketometom (right. image nižšie - kombináciu predĺženej kabíny and 15cm raketometom som ešte seen, but it is of course possible). Vzhľadom that the nie is identifikovateľná gear, it is possible that even this vehicle has a 8-cm rocket launcher (?). Pre this hypothesis svedčí even sure identifikovateľná folding bench on the side of the superstructure at the level of the odkladacích schránok. This bench is possible vidieť for version with 8cm raketometom. On the contrary, been awol for prítomnosť podpery pre 8cm rocket launcher, ktorý sa nachádzal on streche vodičovej kabíny. The vehicle has neštandardne umiestnenú poznávaciu brand that sa had been assembled over the žalúzie, nie under no. It is possible that the ide about the prototype of the 8cm version ???.
