In 1939, there was a requirement to place a bridge structure on crawler tank chassis. Light construction up to 8 tons was required (for Pz.Kpfw.I and Pz.Kpfw.II) and heavy up to 18 tons (for Pz.Kpfw.III and Pz.Kpfw.IV). It is stated that one prototype of a bridge tank on the chassis of one of the versions Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.a. After building and testing the prototype, a series of three machines of the 0th series was ordered on the platform Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.A (4./La. S.100). Production was provided by MAN in Nürnberg. The three machines were completed in 9/1939 and were used in the campaign in Poland.
Serial production was planned, manufacturers were also selected, but after unsatisfactory tests, production was probably rejected. However, in light of the new findings of photographic material, it can be argued that some form of development and production of bridge tanks on the platform Pz.Kpfw.II continued.
