Piranha I/II/III


The development of the Piranha range of vehicles was initiated by the Swiss company MOWAG (MOtorWAGenfabrik) in the early 1970s. It was to be a multi-purpose vehicle with 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 drive arrangements. The first prototype was completed in 1972. This powerful, durable vehicle with a wide range of applications was widely distributed around the world. More than 6,000 machines are in service in 16 countries. It has been produced under licence in 6x6 and 8x8 configurations since 1979 by General Motors of Canada. In 1993, MOWAG came up with a series of improvements, resulting in an improved version of the Piranha II. The next step was the introduction of the state-of-the-art Piranha III in 1996. Under the Kodiak designation, the vehicle has been produced by General Motors since 1998, and has been selected by the US Army as Stryker 2,131 machines for the so-called Interim Brigade Combat Team (IBCT).


The vehicle has a curved front end with prominent headlights, the sides are slightly perpendicular, the rear hull is perpendicular and the roof is horizontal. Additional armour blocks can be installed on the sides. The driver sits in the left front of the hull, above him is a hatch with hatch and periscopes, to the right of the driver is the engine compartment. A turret with armament may be installed in the centre section, or a larger turret with a gun, some versions are purely turretless and unarmed. The swarm compartment is entered through a two-piece door at the rear that opens to the side. There may be two guns on each side in the rear, with additional guns located in the doorway. The crew sits face to face on fixed seats. The number of airborne members depends on the version of the vehicle, for armoured personnel carriers it is as follows: 6x6 10 soldiers, 8x8 14 soldiers and 10x10 16 soldiers. The vehicle can also carry loads of 1,400/1,500 kg (Piranha I/II 4x4), 2,500 (Piranha I 6x6), 3,000 kg (Piranha II/III 6x6), 3,500/4,000 kg (Piranha I/II 8x8), 6,000 kg (Piranha III 8x8), 7,500 (Piranha III 10x10) and 10,000 kg (Piranha IV 8x8). Most of the vehicles have a watertight hull for amphibious operations, with a pair of water launchers at the stern for movement in the water. The hull is also airtight, equipped with a pressurised WMD protection system and personal protective masks, and a fire suppression system is also available.


The modular concept allows quick replacement of the entire power unit. MTU 6V183TE22, Scania DSJ9-48A (both 400 hp) with ZF Ecomat 6hp 600 automatic transmission, or Caterpillar 3126, Detroit Diesel 6V53TA and Cummins 6CTAA8.3-T350 (each 350 hp) with Allison MD 3560P automatic transmission can be installed. The chassis arrangement can be 4x4, 6x6, 8x8 and 10x10 (depending on version), the wheels are independently suspended, all driven and hydropneumatically suspended. Steering is facilitated by power steering and ABS on 4x4 and 6x6 versions and on 8x8 and 10x10 versions by the first two front axles. A central tyre inflation system is fitted, allowing the tyre pressure to be changed depending on the terrain. Top speed on the road reaches 100 km/h in all versions, cruising in the water with the help of the hydrofoils up to 10.5 km/h, range 500 to 800 km (depending on the version).


Vehicles can be equipped with a wide variety of turret and turret types, from uncovered machine gun turrets to single/dual turrets with 25mm, 30mm, 40mm or even 105mm cannon.
