Universal FN MAG machine gun

The universal machine gun is designed for the 7.62 NATO round. The machine gun is characterized by: automatic propulsion by taking powder gases from the barrel bore, a quick-change barrel, belt-fed cartridges - it can use either a permanently connected belt with a capacity of 50 rounds or a disintegrating M13 cartridge belt. The bolt mechanism is of the straight-action closed type with a carried bolt. The bolt is guided by grooves in a prismatic sleeve, which control the shape and lowering of the bolt when it is locked. When the automatics are driven by means of powder gas, a regulator is incorporated in the gas cylinder, which is operated by a knob in the front of the gas handle. If the gun is functioning smoothly the gases escape through the holes in this regulator into the surrounding area. However, should the weapon become fouled or should it become necessary to increase the gas pressure, this regulator is turned and the holes are closed. This regulator is also used to change the rate of fire from a cadence of 650 to 1000 rounds/minute. The feed mechanism is a table-type two-stage mechanism (part of the sledge movement is done when the slide moves forward and the rest when it moves backward). A flame arrestor is mounted at the muzzle. The trigger mechanism is equipped with a momentary trigger (captures the entire surface of the breech). The machine gun is supplied with a tripod in addition to the bipod.

This machine gun has been adopted into the armament of the armies of India, Israel, Sweden (6.5 mm caliber), the United Kingdom, the United States (M240), and 75 other countries. Some sources say that more than 150,000 of these were produced.
