History:

In 1943 missing in the USSR a powerful fighter, which would be produced on the basis of a single-engine fighters. There were already earlier attempts with the installation of the camera into the aeroplane the MiG-3, or to the imported Built a P-40 or Spitfire. Sought is still suitable aircraft, to which it would be possible to install an excellent semi-automatic aerial camera AFA-I. The choice fell on the Jakovlevův How-9, this aircraft allowed a fairly consuming adjustments of the torso, such modifications was the installation of a cannon NS-45, when it was necessary to shift the reverse pilot's cabin, or, on the contrary, the cab install the bomb bay for 400 kg of bombs.

The installation of cameras behind the cockpit was then a simple matter, the new aircraft bore the designation As-9R. Aircraft carrying the armament of the fighter yak-9, i.e. One gun ŠVAK and one machine gun UBS, could therefore defend and fight as a fully fledged fighter aircraft.
