A pair of JAS-39C Gripen aircraft armed with AIM-9M Sidewinder cruise missiles from the 211th Tactical Squadron captured while performing a Baltic Air Policing mission over Kursk Spit in the Baltic States, October 2012. In 2012, the Czech Republic deployed JAS-39C Gripen aircraft with personnel to Lithuania to protect the airspace over the territory and territorial waters of the three Baltic states - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The Czech Gripen first performed this task in 2009. The main operational task of the contingent was to secure the airspace of the Baltic States - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - with four JAS-39C Gripen aircraft as part of the NATO Integrated Air Defence System (NATINADS) from Šiauliai base in Lithuania. The operational takeover from the Danish contingent took place on 1 May 2009. The operational task was taken over from the contingent of the ACR on 1 September 2009 by members of the German Air Force contingent. Members of the Baltic Air Policing contingent operated from Šiauliai Air Base again in 2012. This air base is the main operational airfield of the Lithuanian Air Force. The operational takeover from the Polish contingent took place on Saturday, 1 September 2012. The operational task was subsequently taken over from the ACR contingent by members of the Danish Air Force contingent on 4 January 2013. In addition to guarding the airspace of the Baltic States, other tasks included providing training for the members of the Control and Awareness Centre in Karmelava, Lithuania, and participation in possible Alliance Air Force exercises in the region (e.g. BRTE XIII - Baltic Region Training Event).
The objective of the exercise was to plan and execute air operations against ground and air targets with a larger number of aircraft and 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 1 and 2 vs. 2 aircraft air combat. As many as 28 pieces of aviation equipment were deployed simultaneously during the flight event. The Lion Effort 2015 exercise program was divided into two main blocks. In the morning, missions were flown under a complex scenario with coordination of all the trainers (called Composite Air Operations - COMAO), followed by missions in the afternoon (called Shadow Wave), which focused on manoeuvre air combat and direct air support tasks. Nearly three dozen aircraft had the opportunity to practice air combat tactics together, as well as techniques and procedures for cooperation. Units of 25th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment from Strakonice simulated the so-called "Base Defence Zone", i.e. the defence of the airfield against enemy aircraft, with the 2K12 Kub anti-aircraft missile system (2x 1S91 SURN CZ, 4x 2P25M2).
As of May 20, 2015, a total of 231 sorties and 292 flight hours were flown during Lion Effort 2015. The exercise officially ended on 14.5.2015.
