The weapon was developed as the Browning Model 1918, in 1933 a joint initiative of the Army and the Navy resulted in modifications and corrections to some defects and the feeding mechanism was strengthened to operate reliably with belts weighing up to 17 pounds (7.7 kg), after these changes were made the weapon was redesignated AN/M2.
At the end of World War II, an improved version AN/M3 was developed with an electric trigger and a higher rate of fire.
Apart from aircraft, the AN/M2 was also used exceptionally on the ground, mainly by various special forces in North Africa and Italy, probably mainly because their members managed to loot a wreck here and there - attached is a picture of an AN/M2 on an LRDG jeep.
