Carro Armato M Celere Sahariano
During the fighting in Africa in 1941, the Italian designers of FIAT/Ansaldo were inspired by the captured English Cruiser Mk.III cruiser tanks and their Christie-type chassis and decided to copy it. The Christie chassis parts were copied from a captured Soviet BT-5 chassis that was captured during the Spanish Civil War. The company created a mock-up of the approximate shape of the hull and turret in 1:1 scale on the M 14/41 chassis (M 15/42 - according to I. Pejcoch) and commissioned the preliminary specifications of the new tank. The weight was to be around 13.1t, the armament was to consist of a 47mm L/32 calibre cannon, a Fiat SPA 11.3 litre (275hp) engine and a top speed of around 55km/hour. The crew was to consist of 4 men. The project was approved on 13.8.1941 and the prototype was to be produced.
In spring 1942 one prototype was built and passed the tests, but the project was stopped in 7/1942. Army command interest was concentrated on the tank M 15/42.
