The multinational arms concern BAe won a competition announced by the US Army years ago. The winning weapon, branded LW155, was accepted into service in 1997 as the M777. The prototype was developed by the British design office Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering, which belongs to the BAe concern, but after the acceptance of the weapon into the North American army, the assembly of serial weapons was moved to the BAe branch located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Three BAe branches are reportedly involved in series production, two of which are based outside the USA.

Canada's first twelve howitzers have been serving in the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery since 2005. Another 25 M777A2 howitzers are expected to be delivered.
India
In 2007, the British branch of BAe delivered one piece for testing in the M777A2 version. India reportedly ordered 145 pieces.
Australia in 2008 approved the delivery of 57 pieces of the M777A2 version.

M777A2 howitzers of the Ukrainian Army deployed in combat during the Russian-Ukrainian War, approximately 13 May 2022. The weapons in the photos are not equipped with a digital fire control system, making them de facto the original M777 variant. As of 16 May 2022, Ukraine has deployed 74 US-supplied howitzers into combat.

A Russian ammunition depot near the town of Izyum, which was reportedly targeted by Ukrainian M777 howitzers during the Russian-Ukrainian war, on May 16, 2022. Seven infantry fighting vehicles and one tank were reportedly destroyed as a result of the shelling. At the same time, an unknown number of Russian soldiers were killed.
