The project was created at the request of the French army to develop and introduce a new tank for infantry support with the ability to fight against other tanks. Specifications were drawn up in 1919/20. The final specifications and the official announcement of the competition was in 1921. Four companies participated in the competition with five prototypes.

Schneider-Renault type A
The prototype passed the trials, and upon their completion in 3/1925, the Schneider-Renault Type A was their winner. However, these trials brought new requirements from the army, which were to be translated into a new type of tank under the name B. This entire program was a direct predecessor to the later B-1 tanks (B-1bis,B-1ter).
